    Re: How qualified are you?

BSc (Hons) in Human Biology and I work in IT.

I started off as a developer and moved up through analyst to various managerial positions until I got bored and went back to Project Managing with Business Analysis.

I don't think my degree subject made a difference, but I wouldn't have been even allowed some of my jobs without a degree (3 out of my last 4 jobs required a degree just to apply).

    Re: How qualified are you?

I'm doing a BVSc (Vet science) which is essntial to be a vet so not very useful unless you want to be a vet.
However, out of my brothers, one did an MEng (general engineering) and is now building roads etc, he said in hindsight he would have done a special Automotive engineering had he known as he couldn't get into automotive engineering with a general engineering degree and he wanted to work on cars.

My other brothers, one did BSC (physics) and is now on the graduate course for HSBC (any degree would do I believe but he got some help from getting the degree from Durham rather than one of the less known universities). Other brother did Archeology and Anthropology and has just qualified as a chatered accountant, again I don't think it mattered what degree he did, only that he had a degree.

From looking at that I would say, if you know what you want to do after your degree, look carefully at whether they want a specific degree or just a degree. If they want specific, do specific, if they just want a degree, do whatever you like doing most. One of my friends started doing Chemistry degree, but he's not a chemist, never really got into the course, failed exams and resits and ending up taking a year out. Now he's heppy doing computer science (ish) because his passion is computers. Choose something you want to do and you will do it

    Re: How qualified are you?

No degree, a few Highers but nothing interesting.

But then my job is a complete fluke and there are no formal qualifications for it anyway.

    Re: How qualified are you?

    Wow so many great qualifications!

I have been an IT consultant for some years and have only got A Levels and GCSE's but have worked hard to progress my career. I chose to be an IT consultant initially because of the money but I have become bored over the years and have done a bit of freelance web work.

Going forward I would like to become a IT project manager working on larger scale projects (say 6-9 months) however I don't know how likely this will be due to not having any direct project management experience. I could carry on as I am earning an ok wage but I am bored and think there is more to life. I also fancy doing a degree having recently getting the bug to learn again whilst doing some industry certifications.

If anyone has any ideas about what kind of degree would be useful for an IT project management, it would be appreciate. It has to be a degree available to distance learning students though as I will be doing this in the evenings and weekend.

    Re: How qualified are you?

Got my BEng in Automotive Engineering Design 2 years ago and currently working as a design engineer for an off highway truck manufacturer.

Just starting my career as a design engineer really, but hopefully will move around and get experience elsewhere

    Re: How qualified are you?

    BSc Computer Sceince & Cybernetics.

Now work as a "Quant Dev" or Quantative Analytical Developer for a comparitivly large hedge fund. Started out working for a regular bank (trading floor) straight from uni. I'm not a member of the BCS, but rather than a degree, it was my competing in the Imagine Cup Software Design Challenege, that got me my job. I'll have to do some proffessional finance qualifications soon thou.

The CS bit of my degree bored me to death, the class went at a snail's pace.

    Are you self employed ?
If your working for a consultancy, is it not possible to progress into a Project Management position with them. You may find you have to go the BA route but I think this would be better than doing a degree which to be honest may not help you. I would recommend looking on jobserve and talking to some agencies about the requirements for Project Managers. You will probably find experience and things like Prince experience are a lot more valuable.
