iPhone looking a lot better next year.

1) Apple will finally release an iPhone SDK in February next year. This will also allow 3rd party apps for the iPod Touch.

2) As a result of French law, a spokesperson for Orange in France has confirmed that they will be selling unlocked iPhones, though at a higher price and with an unconfirmed date (though they will have to appear before May 2008). Vive la France!

Also, France isn't the only country that mandates unlocked phones. So as the ihone roll out crosses Europe and Asia, there will be more and more sources of unlocked iPhones.
