Most people talk about a C grades and above for GCSEs but the grades go all the way from A to G, I assume this person didn't even turn up for the exam as I sure if you get either your first or last name correct you get 'G' grade.

Grade 'G'! - christ when I did them (last century in '89 I think) the lowest grade to pass was Grade 'E' and that was fairly low even then (doubly so when compared to the O'level). When did this change?

A 'G' grade is worth almost nothing, but it's not the lowest grade- that would be an 'N' for GCSEs, as I understand it.
