    Unhappy Concentration Help

Right. The case is. I thought working from home was cool, and it is very cool but my concentration is getting worse and worse, I need to disaplin my self. I know posting this is a bit of a contradiction becasue this is one of the things that keeps side tracking me, but I was hoping some one could give me some hints on how to keep focused at what Im doing. Its really stressing me now because this work needs to be done.

    HELP!!!!!

headphones on, drink and some food in the room, no excuse to go down for a drink and get diverted then.

if all else fails make someone lock you in the room!

hmm, I had a simlar problem while tryin to revise for my exams last year, but managed to loose the distraction early on so I had plenty of time to do proper revision. Advice I might give would be to set yourself a timetable or something. Set a timelimit for working and a time for breaks etc. Keep a clock infront of you and look at it occasionally to see how long you have. This helps pass the time (as long as you dont look at it too often).

Ok mate you have to be really tough on your self. Dont go downstairs. Have drink and food in the room with you. Ban yourself from the net. Listen to music and break every half an hour for 5min.

sounds a bit like stating the obvious, but imho u gotta structure it mate - i work from home a few days a month & if i don't put a plan together i end up aimlessly surfing & posting on hexus by 11am

    i don't mean 9am - get up...9.15 switch pc on etc..etc..

just set a few goals & a timescale to achieve them & (most importatly ) schedule yourself some breaks, that way you get less tempted to slack off if u know u have a break coming soon
if it ain't broke...fix it till it is

I work from home 75% of the time the best advice I can give is to find your best time of day. For me this means late afternoon evenings. I can achieve more in 4 hours when i'm zoned in than I would in 8 at any other time.

    Copious amounts of redbull! lol

No really, make sure your work area is set out correctly, your monitor keyboard and mouse are in the correct positions. Your chair is at the correct height so you are comfortable. And there are no distractions ie screaming kids, nagging missus who wants money to go shopping.

    Works for me!

If you're working on a computer, make sure it's access line is unplugged. Too tempting to just "check your email" then end up having a three hour game of CS.

    Try to work hours of a normal working day. 930-1030 - coffee break -1045-1230 - lunch - 130-300 - coffee break - 330-530 - go home.

Thats what I did when revising. I know thats not working, but it's the same concept, and it worked for me

Get started is the best way.

I sat for ages thinking about revision for my exams and found a million and 1 other things to do, but once I actually did get started I got 3 hrs done without thinking about stopping.

Yup I agree, comes down to an old saying my electronics teacher had "Things don't get done, till you do em". Best thing is to stop worrying about doing it and just go ahead and do it, then you can have a break and it'll feel like you deserve it

I went for the extreme when doing my exams. I unplugged the RAM out my computer and left it with my dad so I couldn't use it. If I needed a computer, I used my Laptop which only had the bear minimum of stuff on. Took out all things from my room which distracted me.

its hard, but sometimes you have to be tough to get through. All the best mate.

I know exactly how this whole concentrating in a familiar environment is. It's all too damn difficult to drift into doing something else, even checking your email quickly could lead to, for example an email mentioning a new reply on a forum, you reading it and ending up spending hours posting on that forum. Happens to me enough

You should sort out a special working environment. I had this problem when revising for my GCSEs.

I am going to do my best to discipline myself for my sixth form work, yet not let it take over my life.

I have far too many distractions, which is probably why I did so averagely throughout my GCSE's and A levels. However, I did get a good amount of revision done for my economics exams by just sitting in a comfy chair in front of the stereo downstairs (away from the PC ) listening to music, with a nice drink by my side
