    Claiming tax back?

I'm a student and have been since summer last year, and I'm wondering about the procedure for claiming back tax?
I was being taxed by my job as a coffee server, ( ~£500 over a few months) until I phoned the IR to get it stopped. I'd still like that other money back though.
Do they just automatically give it back or do I need to claim?

    Thanks

    Re: Claiming tax back?

I think the IR give it back after a few years work, so leave it until one day you get a big cheque in the post.

    Re: Claiming tax back?

With me they just stopped taxing me for three months because they owed me so much, got it back that way. That being said, my housemate went to the tax office and got it back within a month or two in one lump sum!

To be honest the whole business confuses and annoys me.

    Re: Claiming tax back?

The tax system doesn't work too well for people who earn a lot at one point in the year, but less at other times - eg Students or Contractors.

If you go to the tax office, you should be able to reclaim any tax owing. Or, if you've got a family member who is an accountant, buy them a beer and get them to do it

do not under any circumstances do this. after six years you cant claim it back, and the tax man wont tell you that he owes you money.

you need to call your tax office (the office that your employer uses) and ask for a tax rebate, they will ask you to send in proof, but i managed to get a rebate by just talking to them.

i claimed back all the BR tax that i paid as a student.

ohh this link is good, from a removal company, but the FAQ is good, complete and relevant

Odd, my sister had been in work for around 4 years when she suddenly got a letter from the IR and a cheque for 2 grand 'TAX rebate'. She didn't speak to the IR I am 100% sure.

yes it can happen and does, but usually only if the person has a clear tax record, IE same stable job for a while or only job in a tax year.

An automatic rebate should not be relied on, but happens for a lot of people your right about that

That's just the form I've needed too! Thanks for that!

I think we all owe someone a pint...

Regarding automatic rebates, they do happen. However they will take their time about them - it's money, duh, and the longer it's in their hands, the better for them. Best to actually claim it rather than gambling for an automatic rebate

Oh, that's easy to sort out. I can tell you how you can cut your tax bill down dramatically. It's simple.

    Step 1) Quit your job.

Step 2) Take a MUCH lower-paid form of employment.

The tax you pay will drop substantially. In fact, if you're careful, you can end up paying no tax at all. Omitting step 2) is one way to achieve that, though depending on personal circumstances, there may be additional steps necessary.

Unfortunately Step 3 is "learn to talk like a chav and father 15 children"

Everyone hates tax, yet likes the road network they support, the NHS they fund, the educational system they throw money at....well, maybe not the last one.
