Re: Which company do you like the most (or hate the least): Microsoft or Apple?

As far as corporate image goes, I think Microsoft does a much better job of managing it. We're past the era when it's cool to like Apple and hate Microsoft because they've put a lot of hard work into helping out IT Professionals through things like MSDN, Technet and so on. Not to mention, the entire concept of Microsoft certification exams are a useful goal to aim for.

Apple, I've yet to see do anything positive that benefits the IT industry.

Re: Which company do you like the most (or hate the least): Microsoft or Apple?

Why do people hate a company? Hate is a very strong word.
There are aspects of both companies I don't like very much but you have to accept that both of them got where they are by being very good at what they do.

I'm guessing that most of you don't remember what DOS was like. Well I do, and it's no exaggeration to say that Microsoft totally revolutionised computing when they brought out Windows.

It's simplistic to say that we wouldn't be sitting here pontification about the evils of Bill Gates and his wickedness if that hadn't happened, someone else would have brought out something similar and would have got a similar dominating market presence and then you'd have to hate them instead.

As for Apple, they make a simple to operate computer for people who don't really like computers and don't want to have to think too hard about them. Fair play to them. If I'm asked by a technophobe what computer to buy I always suggest Apple because I know that if I point them in the direction of a PC I'll have support headaches I don't want.

So why hate either? They both have dodgy business practices, but if you think they're the only ones and so should be singled out for hatred I'm afraid the real world has some nasty surprises for you when you go out into it for the first time.

I think it's daft to "hate" one company over the other - they're both international money making corporations that won't stop at anything to become successful.

Personally, although I don't use a Mac any more, I do think OS X is the better Operating System, but I loathe the smug fan culture that surrounds Apple equipment. Also, any Apple fan that calls Microsoft "Micro$oft" deserves to be pummelled with a stick for kidding themselves that Apple is a bloody ethical fairtrade company.

On a daily basis I use Windows, because it's more flexible, and the hardware to run it on is cheaper.

    Voted neither.

QFT, and agreed with all of what Mike said. I simply can't bring myself to be that emotionally invested in a company.

Re: Which company do you like the most (or hate the least): Microsoft or Apple?

I think they are both a pain in the arse. Apple simply for its users and Microsoft because they introduced sloopy coding on a lage scale to the world and now everyone does it.
I still use MS software though and recommend it often since it is most often the best option.
Apple are great because although they charge for what is effectively a service pack, they have no anti piracy measures on it so it comes free anyway.

    Just kidding.

I had always used MS up until last year and at one point would probably find myself slagging off Macs to people who used them. I think to many people on here they will be to quick to judge and just say how they hate mac's when they have never used one.

OS X is a fabulous operating system, its far far better than XP and Vista(from what I have seen of it) When I got my first mac I installed XP on it because I thought I probably wouldn't use OS X much but ended up getting rid of XP within a month.
    However,
The reason you pay a hefty premium on an Apple computer is because of the well thought out designs and small features that make life easier and the whole experience a lot nicer.

There are a few companies selling computers with OS X installed. So you can pick up a cheap machine running the apple OS. Personally I wouldn't buy one. My new Mac Pro is powerful and because of a well thought out component layout inside, every thing is nice and cold and its dead quiet, I can't even hear the machine on when I sleep. I am convinced if you tried to build a PC that was as powerful and as quiet you would spend a lot money than I did.

Plus there is not much you can do on a PC that you can't do on a Mac.
Which is why I put 'MS OS > Apple OS' rather than 'MS OS is much better than the Apple OS'.

Programs that people know and love are easily downloadable and accessible from Windows, yes there may be alternatives for a Mac, but why would you want to change your whole operating system when everything that most people need is in Windows.
