    P60 Help

    Hey

    I got my P60 in the post today, but im wondering if I have paid NI contributions that i shouldnt have. I'm a student in my first year at university. I was under the impression that I didnt have to pay tax or NI contributions, as long as I wasnt earning a stupid amount of money. I earned just under 5k over the year, which I paid no tax on. The HMRC website states:

    The amount you pay is worked out as follows:

    * nothing on pay up to £97 a week (£420 a month)

    I've paid £90 NI contributions. Is this right? Surely I've earned under the limit :s

    Thanks

    The tax system is a bit complicated! From what I understand is that whilst you may have earnt under the limit overall, on a week by week basis you may have exceeded the limits and thus, tax has to be paid by your employer.

    What should happen next is a rebate is sent out to you by your local Tax office, though this can take some time before it happens.

    Or more likely, they'll hope that you forget or don't realise that they owe you money at which point when you make a claim for a tax refund you will have to jump through a million and one hoops and wait a load of months before you can get your lovely meaty refund of a cheque
