Sky 'true colours' ad - the irony...

Is that the ad is faked. An HD TV ad which isn't HD TV. Did anyone else notice? Anyone else think it's just slightly ironic (and bad form)?

It was bugging me that the movement of different aspects of the shots didn't seem to be relative to each other... then each time I saw it I noticed something which didn't look right - check out the way the sleeve of the fisheman moves (it's been 'chopped)...

Am I behind the curve on this - has it been exposed already???

    It's marketing.

Re: Sky 'true colours' ad - the irony...

I was talking to someone about the HD ads on normal TV the other day. How can an advert with 007 waving his arms about show how good HDTV is if it's viewed on a standard definition telly?

Those that can see how good it really is on their HDTV don't need an advert showing them how good it is and those that don't have an HDTV can't see how good it is cos they don't have an HDTV!

Re: Sky 'true colours' ad - the irony...

this thought has occured to me before too

But then i guess there has to be some point to it, otherwise you wouldn't get radio stations and TV channels advertising themselfs when you are watching them.

Re: Sky 'true colours' ad - the irony...

What I've noticed is that they tend to show the adverts in slow motion, or in still pictures, with gives the impression of high def quality. But as iranu pointed out, its a bit pointless.

Re: Sky 'true colours' ad - the irony...

Yea, most these HD promoting ads on non HD systems just use similar editing techniques such as slowly down the motion, and layer multiple elements and things happening to try and convey a feeling to the viewer there is a lot going on and now you are witnessing it. But it's nothing more then that.

Someone is singing during the advert, but it turns out it's just a digital recording coming out of my speakers, fire up the outrage bus!

Re: Sky 'true colours' ad - the irony...

A lot of HD ads seem to use explosion shots with LOTS of debris, probably far more than usual to show "detail".

HD itself is a scam at the moment, while it's great to have Hi-Def pictures now, there's far too much of a premium on them to make them really viable yet. They work for gaming because the price of a HD console now is ridiculously low, a 360 can be had for £100+ But getting HD TV content is just a rip-off, thankfully, from what I hear, Freesat is pushing in this area. I haven't heard much about freesat.

Also, from what I've seen of HD content so far, it's also highly compressed. So all that gorgeous detail is out the pan.

But Sky HD does look fantastic. It is MILES better than Virgin Media HD, the picture is a lot lot better. I think Sky HD is a really good product.

It looks to me like the same old technology drip feed technique to wring the market. HD will be superseded by 'Laser Definition' or 'Quantum Definition' before we know it. I think I'll just sit it all out. Who wants to see bad television in HD anyway?

I don't think it will. HD as we know it now has been around since the '70s, it's taken this long for technology to catch up, and for TV production to completely adopt the technology.

By all accounts, this is the next step up: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultra_hd

This is purely a research project for the time being. The image density of this is ridiculous, the human eye can't see that much detail in anything smaller than a full wall display.

The linked BBC News piece on it is worth a watch: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7617702.stm remember this is about twice the pixel data of current digital cinema!

Re: Sky 'true colours' ad - the irony...

I keep thinking about getting a blu ray player etc.. but I'm sat here watching Iron Man on the old 42" plasma, I don't even have an upscaler and I'm quite content.

The only thing I really liked when I saw it was a HD demo of F1 which looked great.. but who wants to watch F1 anymore?
