    very cool -
    12 russian scientists (and 2 dogs) rescued from the icepack after their base was destroyed... wish they had some decent video of the event! Imagine the temps -25deg c... and bang. no more base! That's really got to put a downer on your day!

    Well at least they actually did some thing about it quickly....instead of arseing about like they did with the submarine, or using poisenous gas..

    i remember a few years back when a guy from the NZ met office was bitten by a shark taking a traditional mid-winter swim off campbell island (furthermost south island to the antarctic) similar kind of rescue operation - most complex rescue op of it's time - I think this beats it hands down!
