    Urban legend

Has anyone heard the urban legend that stated CPU manufacturers add timers to their CPUs to make them slower when a new CPU is released to make the new part seem faster? Sounds like a load of rubbish to me but it would be interesting if anyone has run benchmarks before and after the release of a new CPU. My friend linked to this page which has a video, at the end is the statement: http://videos.howstuffworks.com/podt...tory-video.htm

    Re: Urban legend

I think its pretty much myth as there are a lot of comparison sites out there which benchmark newer CPU's against older ones with much of the same setup as possible. This sort of thing I would think would be noticed.

Sure I use old kit at work, and DO notice a difference between say a Pentium 4 Celeron and the Dual Core Intels.

Yeah, like I said I think it's a load of rubbish. If they were caught (plenty of people do benchmarks) they would be in big trouble so I don't think they'd risk it. Other than that they have loyal customers who they would lose.

Also they can't tell exactly when the new stuff is going to be out as most things are put back

    I'm 100% sure it's just a myth

someone on here once said that they "wear out" and get slower over time because of that.

The way a CPU works, I can't see that happening.

Well, is it not possible for CPU's to wear out? Both from thermal damage and the electron gates inside them getting "stuck" in one position
