Expedia and Opodo were useful for long haul flights (US and HK) though I haven't used either in a while.

Don't just book it. Thomas Cook it!!
Sorry i had to say that being as i work for them.
I normally use expedia to search for the cheapest flights if i'm not going to a thomas cook destination or i've ran out of free flight. Never had any problems from them.

Depends where you are going. Not all airlines are created equal, I often end up going direct to them, you normally get better deals than the broker prices, espesually if your flexible on the dates.

I used www.skyscanner.net for the first time last week and was really impressed with it.
Search any UK airport, to fly to any airport in any given country (or a specific airport in either country if you chose) and see the cost of flying on any day for an entire month all on one screen.
Very easy to adjust the search parameters, and very fast and effective way of seeing the cheapest flights instantly. It then directs you to the official website and you book direct thought the fight operator's website.
