Er, uploading a file somewhere for people to download? If you don't have a webserver but want to distribute a file.
I use rapidshare for uploading CS:S demos of cheaters/hackers etc.

My main reason for rapidshare is storing backups of important uni work (as the servers arent that reliable) and also to put my portfolio and other things like that on.
Sometimes used to store incremental images for backups
I've sometimes used it for 'sending' video footage to people when I've been collaborating on video editing projects with them.
If you're trying to distribute files to alot of people they offer a nice distribution method through their servers for your files (paid of course). Ie if you have a heavily loaded website you could move your images onto rapidshare and let them handle the load etc.
Apart from that backing up files online and sharing work

It's all about mediafire these days. Much cleaner interface you see.
As to what I use it for...transmitting large format graphics to send to printers (when the file size is generally over 5Mb), sharing full res photo sets with family and friends, backing up work / important files (although nothing that anyone else could use - personal details etc...bad idea), some of the freeware apps in my list (see link below) as also hosted there.
Most of the WindowsMobile custom ROMs are hosten on places like RapidShare.
They do also get called something else, but that wouldn't work in a family friendly forum.
Yea, but do all these types files warrant PAYING for an account?
Otherwise they get removed after 10 downloads or 90 days :/ (for rapidshare) dont know what its like for megupload.

£45 or so for a year I have data that is on something like 10 servers and will not be removed (unless it violates TOC which it doesnt) and it's very quick to access, all I need is a link, no server credentials or anything like that
Also if I want to download all of it I can whack it into a DL manager and download all of it without waiting.
porn + warez is the simple answer.
