I'm off to Singapore soon and need your advice please...

    Hi all,

My shopping list has grown and one of the items is this LUMIX LX3K (K for black coloured model). There is a great review of it on Danny Choo's site.

I am currently still using a Sony CyberShot I got in Dec 2006 that is 7.2MP but still works fine. It's a bit slow between snaps and I think the smaller aperture on the LX3 would be great as its 35mm lens is the equiv. of a 24mm - 60mm DSLR; it has fair control as well so I'm pretty much sold.

Is this the latest model though? I believe it also does basic HD recording which will be a definite plus! Should I get a 4GB or 8GB SDHC card? If you know of any handy accessories for this please do let me know.

    Thanks!
    Mike.

Get an 8GB, it's a no brainer with prices as low as they are.

http://www.panasonic.net/avc/lumix/line_up/index.html That's a comparison table of their current line up, looks like it's the most recent to me.

Have you considered the GH1 at all (their "micro-4/3 system")? You get the advantage of interchangable lenses. That said, the LX3 looks like an awesome compact.

Accessory wise depends really on your budget, but depending how into photography you are, there are plenty of things like ND filters and Polarisers to choose from. What i would recommend is their optical viewfinder attachment, though it's very pricey for what it is at the moment (nearly $200USD). Dpreview commented that it also suffers from an underpowered flash which may or may not be an issue for you, panasonic do offer a hot shoe option if you want a bit more oomph.

Bah, I LOVE Singapore with such passion. I would dream of doing so much more travelling around SE Asia in the near future!

I've heard a little here and there about that camera before but only now have I seen the test shots - and it's so nice! And that dude has quite the anime figurine collection lol...

Make sure to take loads of shots out there! What airline you taking of out interest?

Thanks mate, will do. I found this page also with a bit more info,
    http://www.panasonic.net/avc/lumix/c.../lcd.html#no02

I take it their 'motion images' = HD video recording right? I'm sure Danny mentioned something about that as well. As for flash that shouldn't be an issue as this camera does well in low-light anyways; far better than my DSC-T30 CyberShot.

As for the GH1, I did look at it and I like how they've taken the mirror/prism out of the DSLR and gone for a 'LiveView' LCD interface. But with all that bulk I'm sure it'd collect dust in my cupboard like my EOS20D and several Canon 'L' lenses did back in the day. The compact is what I want and the LX3 seems to offer bit of a mix between compact and DSLR 'like' features (f/2.0 and control with decent short-range zoom).

Not sure if you've seen my very very 'humble' figurine mix as well; Danny is the man though in that department ~ companies from all over Japan send them to him for free, for reviewing

I've been to Singapore many times; we used to go there about thrice a year on holiday when my Dad did business there. You can get an idea from several image albums I have of trips to Singapore...at least after I got a decent cam and setup my blog.

I've been on Sri Lankan (our own national carrier), Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines when going across. Not bought the ticket just yet but it'd either be Sri Lankan on Cathay as Singapore Airlines has terrible hours. Sri Lankan have Airbus A330s, Cathay use Boeing 777-300s and I think Singapore does as well.

Haha everyone loves a freebie, damn...

Singapore airlines I have always found really incredible - I took their A380 to London and back after only being in their fleet for a month or two Also I took a local flight on SilkAir and thats why I was asking - I 'got to know' a pretty air stewardess .... you could have looked out for her as she's involved in flights in/out of Singapore.

Haha indeed, my dad used to have a poster up back in the day of like one of their air stewardesses back when they were used as a heavy advertising material (... I guess they still kind of are too) and when he found out me and one became 'extracurricular' he wanted to give me a medal LOLOL.
