    Cheapest Freesat setup?

My girlfriend is looking at getting freesat. The cheapest she has found is with Sky (link below). She would like a PVR player with it, but we haven't found anything less then £200 for the box. With Sky they say 240 channels, as opposed to the 80 advertised elsewhere, she also likes the idea of having it all in one incase of problems. That comes with a standard Sky box - ie no recording.

Can anyone recommend a better/cheaper way of getting Freesat?

    thanks guys

Buy a secondhand skybox from ebay, or ask to nick the old one from anyone you know. Has anyone upgraded to skyHD, for example? See if they've got the old box still.

Now, here's the good bit. Sky have just replaced (and are still replacing) everyones old sky cards, meaning you could also nick someones card too, giving you all the freesat channels. Or if you're not comfortable doing that, you can buy just the card from Sky for £20.
    Moo.

The lack of satellite dish seems to be the big factor, even with the sky box AFAIK Sky would still charge us to fit the dish to the house. Seems without having the dish already fitted your fairly stuck when it comes to choices to getting Freesat.

    thanks anyway

You don't have to get sky to fit the dish, plenty of third party dish fitters are around the place, just check yellow pages. You could even give it a try fitting it your self! However, yes, you'll still need to pay for the dish itself and installation (assuming you get someone in).

Fitting it yourself isn't hard, if you've got half-decent DIY skills

    Talking Re: Cheapest Freesat setup?

Hi, the cheapest way to do it is to buy a Humax Freesat sd or hd, just plug it in to your existing skydish cable and away you go ! or if you have no skydish just do it yourself, buy a cheap dish, lnb and cable kit of say ebay

I got a book from freesatbox.net which showed me how to simply install it all and change the 80 odd channels into hundreds, it also showed me how to get bbc hd c4 and c5 without a skycard in a freesat box or a skybox

I did it all on my own with no prior knowledge in around 2 hours - then junked my sky subscription
