Reminder to fellow London Workers/Commuters - Wednesday 26th

    http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/abcac090-9...44feabdc0.html

The Bank of England, the Treasury, Heathrow and energy companies including Shell and Eon will be among the targets for up to 3,000 climate change activists who will descend on London tomorrow. The protesters are set to form their week-long annual "Climate Camp" at an undisclosed location. From there they intend to carry out protests at a series of targets across the capital.

The full list of 22 locations on the demonstrators' wish-list includes the business department, transport department, Stock Exchange, London City airport, British Sugar, Rio Tinto, Unilever and BAA.
Got the email at work today (work close to some of these companies) - Hope it does not turn into another G20

I must be cursed - how unlucky can one be

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/new...cle6810923.ece

Hate to be such a "Nimby" but not only were they outside the office at work today (albeit peacefully) but they go and set up camp in my local area of Blackheath as well. Loads of them on the train today. Lets just hope they dont want to use the station at rush hour or its going to be even more of a crush than usual

I would like to think the government has bigger things to worry about then climate change atm. I cant help but feel its a fairly frivolous worry when house prices are tumbling, unemployment spiralling up and national debt at an all time high.

Depends on whether you feel that climate change is a serious problem tbh. What's one more economic downturn compared to environmental devastation? So people have to learn how to live within their means, some will loose jobs and go through some hardship, some will loose their property....compared to mass starvation, huge overpopulation leaving to disease, unbelievable poverty and death on an enormous scale.

Bit limited point of view really.

I agree with IBM - ignoring climate change is far worse than any recession.

That's a bit short sighted tbh. The economy will recover at some point, perhaps not to where it was, whereas we really are bodging up the planet at an alarming rate!

Walked past Blackheath common both mornings on the way to train station, and its like having a festival camped out in our local area. Far from being chaotic it seems like it has been invaded by the local middle class "peacefully" protesting as well. Along side the usual "stereo type" tree hugging activists consuming tofu and soya milk, we have the middle class - the likes of Ralph Fiennes family apparently, camping out in their designer tents quaffing wine along side them. Its like they all to busy enjoying the weather to protest.

Wat Tyler will be turning in his grave.

Re: Reminder to fellow London Workers/Commuters - Wednesday 26th

Hmmm, I always think, do these protests ever lead to anything?

I mean its not like something can be done about climate change right now. Sure we can put procedures in place, and get the ball rolling, but I really don't see how peacefully setting up camp is gonna change anything.

Ok, it shows that people are concerned about this, but its only a fraction of the population. And im sure if suddenly everything got more expensive (Travel, Electricity, food, etc) more people would be upset. I am aware its frightfully short sighted, but lets be honest, most people care more about there current well being, and short term gains, than the state of the planet. Alot of people seem to say they want change, but its a whole different ball game when the tax man comes calling to pay for these changes.

Shared a train into work with the protesters this morning, sigh... (surprised to see them up and awake near rush hour) have to laugh how they decided to superglue themselves together inside RBS, just up the road from us, it just had to be them - not sure how that helps global warming?

    http://www.reuters.com/article/envir...5802PU20090901

Question is though have they got their point across? They don't seem to have been given as much press as normal - just a few low key web links and small articles in the paper.

Re: Reminder to fellow London Workers/Commuters - Wednesday 26th

Your right, i suppose it does all depend on someones point of view. I see a lot of this climate change as a chance for people to jump on the bandwagon & make some money out of it. Taxes on everything, limits on what we can buy and a way of companies to increase their margins.

With the likes of China, India, Brazil, even if we did reduce our emissions by 90% we will never be able to make a difference in the wider world. With meat consumption going up, an increase in consumer goods being demanded, unchecked deforestation aswell as demand for cars and international travel soon to be going through the roof, taxing cars or protesting outside petrol/power stations is going not going to make the damnedest bit of difference.

Im not saying which should sit back & turn a blind I, I am a lot more energy conscience then the average Joe with standby lights, bulbs, dripping taps and driving as carefully as i can, but i am sick & tired of being patronised and hounded/taxed for driving and being taxed to the hilt to pay for so called 'greener alternatives'.
