Shutting a bank account & changing direct debit details

Having been stung twice for overdraft fees - not entirely my fault (at least not in my opinion) on a bank account I don't use, i want to close it. Long story short i get a direct debit in and a direct debit out and i get money in two days before the money out. Last month it didn't happen until after the money went out so Natwest charged me for it (or are going to).

The only thing that goes out is my phone bill once a month, if i change the direct debit with Orange to my student account can i then go straight to Natwest and tell them where to shove it?

Yep, most banks have a service to transfer your direct debits and standing orders for you
