How Many People Can Live on Planet Earth? 9pm BBC 2

Horizon tonight, should be an interesting and important discussion of this little talked about issue by David Attenborough. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00pdjmk I tend to agree with him, but even if you don't I think the programme is well worth watching.

Well in the movie Pandorum, the population of Earth reaches 24 billion before life becomes a really rubbish movie with stupid mutants in it and the credits reveal that the bloke you kept thinking looks like Dennis Quaid actually was Dennis Quaid all along

Well, you have a point there and I be the first one to say, they can't, if they could, we wouldn't be wasting millions in aid trying to keep them going when it's a lost cause, it's like trying to keep a dying pet from dying, just let it die already. I'm a firm believer that we should help ourselves first and then help others when we can afford it.

We really need to start saving our resources and put what we have left to useful ideas and projects before it is too late.

I don't see a problem about the lack of water, we already have machines that can take sea water and convert it into drinkable water. Malta for example gets a lot of it drinkable water from the sea, am sure it costs a lot but am sure it pay out in the end.

Food is the real problem, maybe one day we will have technologry to get around this as well, but I see this far away in the future.

I sum up to say I guess one day in the future there will be wars over our limited and dying resources.

One thing in the flim that did shock me was to hear that when he was born, there was only 2 billion and now there is 7 billion, such a steep rise is crazy.

Pandorum was a movie that I enjoyed, didn't expect such a ending through, but even through this is Sci-Fi, this flim can soon mirror what might happen and there is a good chance that it will.

Desalination plants are certainly expensive, but I think they're the future. They ensure that freshwater supplies can be maintained, give a nice secondary bonus of mineral deposits, and even prevent sea-level rises

Maybe once electricity is extremely cheap they'll start being used extensively.

Energy really is the key. If we can find ways to generate energy on an unlimited (or at least with a massive excess) and renewable scale, i.e. nuclear fusion or some kind of solar harnessing technology, we would be able to then run many other technologies, like large scale desalination, that would go a very long way to reduce many of the problems we currently encounter.

All we have to do is survive until we can realise these technologies without killing ourselves in the mean time.

Not a problem if you've already got the (near-unlimited) energy required to run the plants, just add a few pumps to the equation. They already run trans-continental oil pipes, so why not do the same for water?

We can all dream of 'near-unlimited' energy, but it won't do any good.

The fact is that the africans could probably support themselves if they could get rid of their government that is keeping all the money for themselves.

A great deal of our own food is currently imported, even though we have loads of fields unused - why? because of europe! We could grow most of our own food if our government would let us

Point is, you'd need it to run desalination plants on any kind of useful scale (i.e. semi-global), so if you're going to assume the one you must assume the other.

It's not too much to expect that, assuming we survive, in the next 200 years or so those kinds of technology will mature. After all, cold fusion has already been demonstrated, just not in a way that's capable of producing a surpluss of energy, yet...

I can't remember the exact report but it was a few years ago now for something like 11 seconds. The real down side at that point though was that it drew far more energy than it generated. Getting past that is kind of a problem

I think you mean fusion, as in the kind that takes place in a tokamak or the sun - cold fusion is a bit of a myth as things stand.
