The lottery of getting made redundant...

...well what a great friday afternoon I just had.

If you've not guessed I am in the lottery pool for being made redundant...the minor saving grace is that the review process won't begin till May 1st. Unlucky for some others, their review process begins monday.

Perhaps they are the lucky ones in that they can just start job hunting right now...whereas the speech given to the group I was in went along the lines of "stick around till this lot of jobs are done...then we'll most likely kick you out."

Who knows but it's a rotten feeling knowing that it's almost certain you are going.

Sorry, I had to rant somewhere...

It's sort of come from "left field", in that the Christmas meeting was all positives and looking forward to x, y and z and now at the start of March...it's all gone downhill and fast.

I'll shut up and move on now...

Sorry to hear about that. Been in a similar situation where there are confusing messages coming out - brush up the CV, look around, and consider it good motivation to see if you can move up in the world. There were some figures I heard on the radio that said a lot of people had actually done better out of the recession because it'd given them the push they needed to go out looking for jobs and many had ended up in higher paying/better jobs.

Re: The lottery of getting made redundant...

Just a quick q on redundancy pay - our place pays the absolute bare minimum however someone said if you been empployed for more than 5 years you get more pay...but googling equals nowt. Now the redundancy pay amount will determine the "window" of nailing a job as I am considering moving abroad.

    Anyone know for sure?

    Start looking here...

    http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Employme...ancy/index.htm

And yeah, good luck. So long as you keep your wits together and don't wallow around doing bugger all there's a pretty good chance you can come out of this better off than you started.

The process is quite a drawn out one (if the worst does happen after the review) and you should get put on gardening leave for some of it so you'll have time to work on your options.

Re: The lottery of getting made redundant...

In the same situation here, although the entire site is closing at some point this year, with no chance of relocation. Problem for me is that finding another job in this industry would probably require moving, and the wife has just been told her job (good money and car) is safe, and shes happy where she is. Sooo change of career time.

2 years minimum to get anything then.

    * 0.5 weeks pay for each full year of service where your age was under 22
    * 1 weeks pay for each full year of service where your age was 22 or above, but under 41
    * 1.5 weeks pay for each full year of service where your age was 41 or above

Week is capped at £350 now going up to £380

A nice little calculator for you.

Don't forget, you WILL NOT be payed benefit during any notice period, if you have been paid in leu of notice. Redundancy payments can affect the amount of benefits you get, having saving of more than 4k is a problem, however you can pay down debt, to reduce you savings level.

Best thing to do is get that CV sorted, find another job and move before they make you redundant it is much easier to find a job when you have one... I know I have spent much time in and out of employment. If it looks like they want you to stop till the end... tell them you want 3 months "bonus" for working to their timescale, thats what I did with my previous employer.

As said get your CV sorted.

If its a technical developer/BA roll feel free to ping it to me, as I've been doing most tech interviews for quite a few different companies over the last 4 years!

    Good advice from oolon.

When you are still in a job it's a lot easier to negotiate for a better salary too.

Well I'm single, renting...sooo....change of location perhaps!! I am looking at getting a Working Holiday Visa for Japan This REALLY could be a massive opportunity in disguise (being put on the to-be-assessed-for-redundancy-but-really-you-are-going-anyway list). I am SOOO excited if I get to work/holiday in Japan for upto a year; don't even care if I am a farmer at least I am there!

Re: The lottery of getting made redundant...

the whole way that redundancy is "scored" in certain wind down situations is very weighted towards the employer or agency.

I'm not entirely sure the law has any real effect tbh.. they get shot of you how they want and when they want.

Not really, many employers like employees who have gone away and done something.

Just try and achieve something while you're away (learn Japanese would be an obvious one) and it should form a topical discussion point in any interview situation.
