Steve Jobs: YouTube replaces BluRay for HD Video distribution

I'm speechless... what a smart guy!

Sad thing is the legions of izombies/isheep are probably going to believe him

    http://9to5mac.com/Steve-Jobs-BluRay-3490436

A 9to5mac reader asked SJobs@apple.com if future Macs would support BluRay. While not flatly denying the possibility, Jobs certainly didn't give out much hope in the form of his famous "stay tuned" responses.

Jobs did offer up a helpful alternative from his good friends at Google: YouTube.

Re: Steve Jobs: YouTube replaces BluRay for HD Video distribution

I'm sure Youtube's "1080p" at low bitrate is equivalent to a 50GB bluray of high quality 1080p video

50GB for a 2 hour film = 4.2GB of video for 10 minutes on a Bluray (the maximum length of a Youtube video).

I know sure as hell Youtube is not anywhere near that quality... Less than half in fact ("your videos can be up to 2GB in size")

Internet connections in the UK would never be able to handle bluray quality streaming...

What's the problem? The emailer was asking how he could distribute HD video to his friends and family. He was told that Youtube supports HD and so was provided a viable alternative to BluRay.

Re: Steve Jobs: YouTube replaces BluRay for HD Video distribution

Read the post before yours. Youtube "HD" is not HD. It's only high quality in comparison to normal youtube quality. To compare it to Bluray shows a ridiculous lack of education for the head of a large electronics+software company.

Pixel size of the screen (resolution) is just a marketing thing in this case, it's the bitrate that really matters whether a 1080p screen will be a consistently high def picture or not.

Re: Steve Jobs: YouTube replaces BluRay for HD Video distribution

He asked if bluray was coming to the mac. That question wasn't answered.

He wanted to use bluray to distribute HD video "while retaining high quality". Youtube does not do that, at least for us non-Apple fanboys.

The apple fanboys are probably thinking that youtube quality is better than bluray, because they usually don't have their own opinions/brains

Re: Steve Jobs: YouTube replaces BluRay for HD Video distribution

Yeah, BBC iPlayer also call their higher quality video version "HD", but neither them nor Youtube are actually HD(the BBC don't even bother to bring it to 1080p).

You'd need around a 60mbps internet connection to stream Bluray... Our government in their infinite wisdom consider 2 to be a good standard for the future.

With that inbred luddite tw/ David bloody Cameron whining that we should be happy with less than that

Re: Steve Jobs: YouTube replaces BluRay for HD Video distribution

Whats more Jobs recommends a non Apple service ...

He calls it "A world of hurt" the licensing. Right, so all those small companies which have signed up to it went through a lot more hurt to get their name on the BDA. He just doesn't want to do it because of Apples global digital distribution domination.

I would consider a MBP if Blu-Ray was an option.

OTOH nice to see Mr Jobs answering emails. Even though as a politician. Hey vote for him in the next election?

Re: Steve Jobs: YouTube replaces BluRay for HD Video distribution

Surely you-tube HD is suitable for videos of friends and family, and is a ready-made easy distribution service?

Sure, on one hand you could say he's dodging a blue-ray question (oh noes), but on the other he's provided a perfectly suitable solution for the task in mind. No-one asked for the click-wheel either.

Re: Steve Jobs: YouTube replaces BluRay for HD Video distribution

Have you looked at the quality of youtube HD?

If you've spent £1k on a video camera like the excellent HDR-XR550VE, you want to be able to not compress it to the standard of some companies choosing.

Plenty of people are un-able to stream HD vid at reasonable quality via their internets.

But what is the worst thing is plenty of the classic mac demographic are the types who would take this:
    http://www.techstore.co.uk/browse.ph...dLineID=137791
On holiday. They are not that expensive and the quality is above that of many broadcast, so why would you want to be forced to use one technology to share it.

Its silly to restrict what people can do, if you tube is better for sharing then assuming they know about it, they would be using it!

If they were concerned about restricting what people can do then they wouldn't be using a mac in the first place

It's not really a suitable solution for the task in mind though and I think thats the point here. There are 2, well actually 3 problems with the youtube "solution" so to speak.

    1) It's not actually HD. It's not even close.
    2) There is a maximum length of 10min per video
    3) Sure they can watch the video, but can they save it to watch offline without resorting to hacks/very techy solutions?

It completely ignores the original question to be honest and doesn't provide a workable solution.

It is nice to see that Steve actually replies though, even if its a pointless answer that avoids the original question

Is £1k is the median price for HD video cam? Can you get anything that's similar (maybe scaled down to 720p, but retaining good low light performance) for half the price? A friend asked me about video cam the other day, with HD and solid low light performance as pre-requisite but I know nothing about them.

Re: Steve Jobs: YouTube replaces BluRay for HD Video distribution

In all honesty I'm not the person to ask, my AV nutty acquaintance is off on holiday (he takes about 4 months a year off!).

Its more a case of I know he had it, saying how good its performance and battery stamina where for something so small + lightweight.

But this is way off topic, dragging it back you can get things like the Flip series which have reasonable performance for <£150. My point is if your spending the £1.5k for a Macbook Pro. Your probably able to spend a similar sum on a premium recording device. Would be a shame to only have mediocre results!
