He does look awkward carrying it though IMO

So basically the CPU plays no part in the HD video on the iPad? It's all done on the GPU and the GPU is optimized for HD?

The GPU offloads most of the processing off the CPU. This is the same for modern PCs too. Even desktop processors can struggle if they have to do all the decoding of HD media files.

It still plays a part, but it's a lesser part than it would be otherwise, yes.

    This.

Don't you need something like a 3GHz+ Dual Core to handle 1080p footage without any acceleration? Even then, doing it in graphics hardware is often much better from a quality perspective as all the scaling and any de-interlacing can be done with much higher precision without effecting system performance. Doing the same in software would take a top end processor, even today.

I'm typing this on a friend's Ipad - on the touch keypad and I am very impressed with the way the whole thing is thought out. The touch screen does take a bit of getting used to (I've just accidentally thanked cat-the-fifth (but I'm sure he deserves it for something )) but it is a good bit of kit - and I am more impressed than I expected to be!
