    Statistics - vital or otherwise!

Just had a look at the HEXUS statistics - and we are just shy of 2,000,000 posts (mostly quality ) and 1,100 members short of 80,000.

Now all you lucky guys (and girls) going off to Uni, how about spreading the HEXUS good word, once you have recovered from the excesses of freshers week?

look, we may have 2,000,000 posts, but we sure as hell don't have 80,000 "members". perhaps a cull of unused accounts, and banned spammers would give us a credible number to aim for?

Re: Statistics - vital or otherwise!

I was thinking the other day that my post count must be around the mean value, given the stats mentioned. I was wondering what the distribution is: how many one-post accounts are there, and if the majority of posts are from ten accounts. It would be interesting in a pointless way to have a ranking, so I could see I was now the 1000th ranked by post count. Maybe also a rank for the last month or year, so it would be simple to see whether someone's posted a lot recently.

Well the question is, how do you statistically seperate an "active" member from "inactive" without removing new members.

True, and the aim is to increase the number of active members, those who benefit from and contribute to the community.

Activity is hard to measure - we have members who are active for a while, then drop out of sight for whatever reason, then pop up again,. And there are members active in other forums who don't post in GD (or wherever) or who may only occasionally. .

But the intention at the moment is to get more members joining and contributing, and one way is word of mouth to and from those going up to University where they are meeting relatively large numbers of new people.

Well, I was a drunken student once! (but then E mail was something you sent from a V52 terminal attached to a mainframe, a PC was a PDP 11/40, and JANET was a girl in the flat downstairs!)
