thats becuase its easier to clear up after a kid has finished with an ipad, instead of trying to put a thousand pieces back into a box
    - that is until the 2 year old throws the ipad across the room and the screen shatters into 1000 pieces
(true story - happened to my cousin )

Re: Hard to believe how much Lego fails noawdays

To be fair Lego has improved over the past few years.

There was a point where almost everything was pre-moulded and they got slated for it, the sets that have been coming out recently are back to what they used to be.

I think the planes\airport sets are a bit different, I know they are pre-moulded and single use but they look so much better for it, when I was a kid the planes were a bit naff in comparison. I wouldn't want many more pre-moulded bits but for that they are perfect.

I want the Tower Bridge set, that looks amazing!

    Nail on the head Trig.

However, for those without your imagination, it must have been amusing/worrying to watch you when you were a kid whooshing a red/blue/black/yellow/white lump through the air.

Re: Hard to believe how much Lego fails noawdays

I really miss how Lego used to be and honestly think society is worse off because of Lego's decision to use silly amounts of pre-modded parts to make things easier. They could easily just rebrand a lot of it Playmobil and no-one would know.

For me, the thing that made Lego great was the fact that you started with a big box of random pieces that had no resemblance at all to what you were planning on making (except maybe a few wheels and tyres). Then you'd spend a couple of good hours constructing and end up with something like a fully working car with fully working gear boxes, seats that adjusted in multiple directions and even engines with moving pistons.

That was the beauty of Lego for me, creating something realistic, functional and awesome looking out of mere block and bars in varying sizes. From "2ers" to "12ers" and all the sizes in between, with only the odd special piece thrown in, which was always there to fit a function and never just a way to make the bodywork look curvier.

My favourite styles of Lego we're the Technic of course, and i also loved the Model Team sets but they were pretty expensive but well worth the money, They did some pretty big and great detailed models, i had (correction, still have) these 2 Highway Rig and the Whirl and Wheel Super truck I would usually pick a set at random, build it, and then it would sit pride of place on my shelf for a week or 2 before i'd dismantle it and build another.

Even as an adult i used to get my mum to buy me a lego set for christmas each year as it was traditional that for as long back as i could remember i would always spend a lot of christmas day playing with my new Lego when i was a kid. But it kind of died out as they were only small token present sets and would be made in 5minutes so were rubbish, and the tradition died out. Although it's started coming back a bit the last few years as i've been building a set with my nethew at the table each of the last few years.

Sorry for the essay. I started off saying how i thought society had suffered due to the easier lego sets with their large molded pieces, and i really do believe that. I would, without a shadow of a doubt say that Lego influenced my problem solving abilities and how well i performed in school on subjects based around maths and science. After all, day in, day out, from the ages of 4+ Lego has been constantly making kids learn hands on skills like counting, spatial awareness, gearing, linkages, the strength of triangles, air pressures, angles, organisation skills and how to put flat pack furniture together to name a few.

Lego was suppose to challenge you. That why it was awesome. It's not meant to do must of the work for you.

p.s. I Still have on my shelf, my home made full suspension mountain bike frame based around a 4bar linkage design that i made when i was about 15 out of 1/2 JCB Technic set and 1/2 Moto cross technic for the springs and wheels. May have to get the camera out in a bit and post some pics up.

Might go get lost in the attic making Police / Fire Boat and then build the hospital. Then take the boat and smash it into the hospital.

    The memories lol

    K'nex was always better!

My best ever christmas was when I was about 9 or 10 and I got a walking dinosaur made from K'nex .

I had the Highway Rig (must be 20 years ago now!) and thought it was brilliant! Made loads of great vehicles with those wheels! Really wanted the Whirl and Wheel set as well.

I seem to remember finding k'nex quite sore on the thumbs, especially making the track for the bulldozer.

I had that airport as a kid, awesome times. I always wanted the shuttle launch pad - I had the one on the back of the 747 though. Still have all the original build guides in a ring binder and two drawers of bricks at home. I remember the first kit my Dad got me when I was 3 was the pirate ship - good times.

Random Lego box all the way. I was a master at making an entire farm out of bog-standard lego. My speciality was a combine and a fully functional plough (which if you look at a plough is quite difficult to recreate in lego!).

I had the launch pad, so so many hours of fun.

New Lego is poor though, that said I'd still not turn down the chance to own a Lego Death Star/Millenium Falcon.

The Star Destroyer is pretty cool Nick

I still want some of the other very large collectable sets, I just don't have the disposable income I used to.
