NASA will hold a news conference at 2 p.m. EST on Thursday, Dec. 2

WASHINGTON -- NASA will hold a news conference at 2 p.m. EST on Thursday, Dec. 2, to discuss an astrobiology finding that will impact the search for evidence of extraterrestrial life. Astrobiology is the study of the origin, evolution, distribution and future of life in the universe.
wonder what they are going to say, they found life, or they found a planet that can host life?

I suspect it's the latter. The life that it will need to host currently resides on Earth. Maybe they will announce the construction of a new Noah's Ark just before 2012.

    So why the long face?

New exo-planet with the correct atmosphere?
Bacteria/simple life on that intercepted comet?

Re: NASA will hold a news conference at 2 p.m. EST on Thursday, Dec. 2

Unlikely to be from the intercepted comet, that was from Japan - not NASA's call. We've already found amino acids on comets, c.f. Stardust probe, in any case.

I would go for either a proper Earth-Like planet, 290K + water etc, or the discovery of something like amino acids on Mars (long shot, but there we go).

It's usually up to university teams, etc to do the spectroscopy and extended evaluation of potential exo-planets for things like probable composition and so on. That said, perhaps something's come out of Kepler - but again, Kepler just churns out a list of possibles, it's up to researchers to manually decide which ones to investigate further.

It's clearly something that's being published in Science (given that the press release says it's embargoed), so it's likely to be something to do with low-level life rather than little green men. They've got a molecular evolution professor (http://www.ffame.org/people/sbenner.html) on hand, so clues there? Most of the people there seem to be concerned with evolutionary molecular biology. It might even be some breakthrough in working out how life started on Earth.

"Currently, I am a NASA Astrobiology Research Fellow through the NAI and Astrobiology/Exobiology at NASA working jointly between the ASU NAI team in residence at the USGS in collaboration with Dr. Ron Oremland pursuing As-biogeochemistry, cyanobacteria, novel uses for as yet undescribed metalloenzymes and of course, arsenic-based life! " From Dr Wolfe-Simon's page - Arsenic (or non-carbon) based life discovered perhaps?

From the evidence above I would give an educated guess at: "Scienctists synthesise simple non-carbon based life form" or "Evidence for non-carbon based lifeform discovered on Earth".

So have they just found similar conditions on Titan (arsenic) - so technically those microbes could survive there?

We'll find out in 4 hours...
