    Avoiding/reducing Razor Bumps?

Basically they're getting on my wick end.

I don't think I'm bad at shaving and i've never cut myself but the bumps are getting really annoying. I'm thinking if i get a decent razor it will help, any suggestions on a razor - i don't really want to go all out on one?

Currently I'm using some bog-standard Bic ones along with Nivea 'sensitive' shaving gel. Could there be anything else I haven't looked over, including technique?

    Re: Avoiding/reducing Razor Bumps?

If you're anything like me...you're boned. My face just doesn't like 'em.

Electric was the only thing that worked for me, that, or leaving it as long as possible between shaves...like...once a week. Fortunately it grows slowly so its manageable. I find shaving when its longer much less aggravating for some reason.

Hopefully there'll be some suggestions here I've not tried...but I've pretty much given up after all these years.

    Re: Avoiding/reducing Razor Bumps?

Use a good electric shaver - i generally reccomend the braun ones (foil based) but make sure you spend a decent amount on a good model, don't go for the cheap ones..they will cut your face to shreads!

I have a Braun 3 Series Foil Shaver 340, its a wet and dry model with flexible foil, and it works really well for me. You still need to be careful not to press to hard etc, but thats common sense anyway. Gets me a better/closer shave than a manual razor, and in 1/10th of the time.

I still use an electric shaving oil (by the "real shaving co") beforehand which I find really helps - if I remember to use that before shaving then my skin is usually perfect afterwards. If I don't I can get razor bumps in a few places, but not that much. You also want to leave it as long as possible in between shaves..I generally only shave every 2 or 3 days (1 day after I have that sexy stubble look, 2 days its still sort of like that but getting a bit hobo, 3 days and I should be on the streets). I wouldn't shave at all if I could help it but sadly my GF can't cope with the bristlyness, and I do have to see customers occasionally so too long is out

I paid £30 for mine but its usually £60-£70 I think - so get it on special offer, or one like it.

    Re: Avoiding/reducing Razor Bumps?

I wet shave using a twin blade and shaving gel. If you have sensitive skin, use an appropriate gel for sensitive skin, and take your time shaving, without going over the same place more than once. It is worth trying different makes of gel too, just in case you are sensitive to any of the ingredients.

You might find shaving oil is better for you

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb...having&x=0&y=0

or Google 'Shaving oil'. It is slightly odd using shaving oil, but I find I get a slightly smoother shave with it.

    Re: Avoiding/reducing Razor Bumps?

I used to use oil and a Gillette Fusion before I grew a beard, that was the best combination for me. Although the Real Shaving Company shaving cream also worked well.

    Re: Avoiding/reducing Razor Bumps?

I've tried loads of gels, oils, soap sticks, brushes, fancy razors, non-fancy razors, traditional razors etc. not to mention full prep and post rubbish.

At best I can wet shave twice before getting a problem.

But with a good electric it's no problem at all. Foils give me a closer shave, but if I don't shave ultra regularly then they struggle with the longer hairs, so I actually prefer a good rotary.

    Re: Avoiding/reducing Razor Bumps?

I'm currently on a Wilkinson Sword Quattro Titanium, and Lush's Shave the Planet. It's pretty much the only combination my face hasn't regularly fallen apart from - and even then I need to leave several days between shaves (tho to be fair, I'm lazy so I often leave a week between shaves anyway ).

For electrics I always prefered a good rotary to a foil - go for the ones that you can wash under a hot tap as I've found they stay in good condition for longer.

If you´re using a bic no wonder you´re cut to ribbons.

Wilkinson Sword Quatrro and king of shaves gel works wonders for me (plus I´m a tightwad & the gel lasts AGES as you need very little)

It seems you get what you pay for with razors. Plenty of people in this thread saying you'll shred yourself with a bic, get a decent wet razor.
Personally I had a cheap philips rotary electric which missed most of the hair, the only way to get a decent shave was to shave for hours on end leaving my skin raw. Got a decent electric (expensive Remington rotary) and the difference is night and day, no rawness and much better shave.

Basically whatever you decide to get don't be cheap!

mach 3 is the best i have ever used, tried the 4 blade one and it didn't stand a chance against a 5-7 day beard as i dont shave often.

    Re: Avoiding/reducing Razor Bumps?

Electric all the way, a normal razor blade cuts too close to my skin, it also leaves the hair very sharp.

Also if it's really bad do you need to cut all the way to the skin? Now due to my ethnicity (Afro Caribbean) my hair is curly. Finding a electric shaver which cuts a certain way depending on your hair type could also be the solution to try.

I find my skin reacts better if I use this (beard trimmer) instead of this (shaver) to shave and the blades which are a no no for myself. Also putting a hot flannel on your face after to try and release the hairs that are trapped (cause of razer bumps) with a tweezer or ask someone close to help you. Then use antiseptic spray (savlon) daily until they go.

Freeing up the hair allows for the skin to recover and for the hair to continue growing as norm, having my beard for about 7 years(fresh beard owner), it's just within the last year I've found a solution.

    Re: Avoiding/reducing Razor Bumps?

I kept getting bumped up with super-duper-${impressivesoundingsciencyname}-${lastyearbladecount+1} gifted to me for christmas, and honestly, they were just messing up my face and doing a crap job shaving the hair in general. I went and got a SensorExcel (two blade) a few months ago, and I haven't had any skin problems since, and it cuts much more cleanly, and easy to get around the ears and nose and whatnot.
