Not so bad an idea, what could possibly go wrong ?
More realistically disposal in a subduction zone using a penetrator.

That has actually been seriously considered, along with shooting it into the sun and far off into the universe. Apparently the only real problem is rockets sometimes explode and a rocket explosion is a big explosion, that combined with 30-40 tons of nuclear waste would ruin a few hundred million peoples entire day.

France in some ways is much more forward looking TBH. Look at nuclear power plant development and the fact that ITER is being built there. They were the main driving force behind Airbus and Arianespace AFAIK which challenged the traditional US dominance in these areas.

Infact,China seems to be the biggest investor in renewable energy too:

They could probably start undercutting us in the next few years due to lower manufacturing costs!

    Re: Germany renounces nuclear power

France's attitude, at least from what I've seen is one of absolute pragmatism. An attitude sadly lacking in the rest of the world when it comes to nuclear power and energy provisioning in general. Most of the world is still locked in hyperbole, sensationalism and outright denial sadly. I think in a few decades they'll be reaping great benefit from the investment they're making today.

Clearly the containers should be made from the same thing that a planes black box is

More seriously, I can't believe they did this. There's knee jerk reactions and there's knee jerking so hard you do a backflip and depart all rational thought.

Still, it was a reasonably sound idea, since the tsunami hit Japan and knackered their ractor, I mean what with all the oceans all around Germany...oh...wait.

On top of this it was an old reactor meant to be decommissioned soon.

The worst thing is because of the Greens so many of the old reactors have had their lives extended since new ones were not built due to their lobbying.

    Gah.
I aways remember Jonathan Porritt turning up to a public meeting about a low level nuclear waste dump in his big car, as did everyone else except my Dad, (mum and me) who was there as the lamb to slaughter we had travelled their by bus.
