    Working at Altitude - Medical

I will be going off to Chile later today to do some tech work for a mine, the mine is at about 12,000ft so I will need a medical...

Anyone ever had a medical for anything like this? I'm not sure what to expect really?

I would guess they will check out your lungs etc. I used to fly in RAF and above 10000 feet you would start to use partial pressure oxygen as that is deemed to be the point where the oxygen levels have dropped substantially. However, I used to ski in Europe and was regularly above 10,000ft in the Alps so no great shakes.

I wouldn't worry about it to be honest.

I worked underground years ago, in order to get the job i had to have a proper medical for Health and Safety i assume and go on a course at a local Fire Brigade Training Centre to learn how to use Breathing Equipment etc, nowhere near as deep as your going though.

Re: Working at Altitude - Medical

You might notice some very minor effects. There is 65% of the oxygen at 12000 compared to sea level, and models predict about 80% o2 saturation. This is technically hypoxic.

You might notice headaches, dizzyness, and almost certainly fatigue. This is well below the altitudes where serious altitude sickness becomes a problem, and you will acclimatize quickly.

It is amazing how adaptable we are. People have climbed Everest without oxygen, while if I were transported there I'd pass out in minutes just sitting still.

    Have fun!

I am stopped off for the night now, we where driving uphill for about 5 hours! Still more to go tomorrow. I feel a little light headed and do have a head ache but thats probably because I started traveling at 3:00pm on Sunday and have only just stopped now.

If you listen really hard to the background you can hear the siren from the mine.

Re: Working at Altitude - Medical

Honestly? Reduced oxygen is much ado about nothing. I spent years working in a datacenter with constant reduced oxygen (15%) as its fire suppression system, and never noticed - although occasional guests said it hit them hard

There is plenty of that lovely blue sky in the UK as well - for about 5 minutes a year!
