It's a sad time indeed for the tech world, with this so soon after Steve Jobs' death. Without Dennis' contributions who knows where we'd be now? Unix and C have been fundamental to the development of modern computing. RIP.

This is very sad indeed, he created some immensely simple yet powerful concepts and ideas. In my mind, those are the best kind.
And he wasn't a mad bully who ignored his daughter.
But we won't get any gushing from Stephen Fry, or probably any coverage from the beeb.

Complete lack of fanfare, another reason why Dennis Ritchie was a giant. He was a programmer, never a cult leader.
Really sad news. This man did so much for computing and never self publicised.
The greatest man many have never heard of.
Really sad it won't get anywhere near as much publicity as Jobs,

A real shame... someone who was truly talented taken before their time - I echo what TheAnimus said - We won't get the same public outpouring for this guy by celebrities and other media types, purely because they didn't appreciate that without this guy, There would basically be no MacOS and many other mainstream products that were based on Unix frame or C programming language.

At least amongst us Geeks he will receive the appropriate mourning. It's sad to think I am only just learning about the mazing things he shared with us.
The world has lost a great man, may we be able to replace him with people able to give as much as he has.
Given the trend of churning out mediocrity and endless wheel reinvention in recent times, it seems very unlikely.
