    PHP industry accepted qualifications

Im wondering if anyone knows a good course for me to learn, to get a starter job in web development focusing in PHP.

I have designed a few sites already and dabbled in programming. I have a degree in computing and management sciences but it was a long time ago. Im looking at moving on from my technical support job and doing a job that i enjoy more.

It's not really about the money.

    Any ideas ?

I'd suggest building a portfolio is the way forward, get a few sample sites put together for different sectors and purposes and then start advertising as a freelancer in your spare time. Once you've got some proven experience behind you, you can start looking at making it your full time job.

In terms of qualifications, it's better to look for what you *need* to learn to pull off your concepts and find a course that teaches that. For example, you can do basic PHP, but how are you with related things such as MySQL, Flash, Quicktime etc?

I'd have to agree building a portfolio is the way forward. I don't think there's a lot of point in getting PHP qualifications, I've never seen a job ad ask for one, or been asked if I had one, or know anyone that has one!

Afraid I don't know about PHP but if you're after a website to develop for a portfolio...

    PHP qualifications? Pointless....

PHPs merrits are its incredibly easy to write, just incredibly simple.

Downside is it really has no niceties of high level languages really, doesn't lend itself to elegant explanation of thought and suffers from the mud of proceduralism.

As others are saying, make a portfolio. I'd also say to maybe look at other technologies too, like Ruby on Rails or even MVC .Net or Monorail.

Perhaps its worth getting an understanding in one of the more recognised PHP frameworks such as Zend, Code Ignitor, Yii or CakePHP.

Zend MAY do a certification as well... worth investigating.
