    Consumer Rights for Servicing?

If I took my bicycle to Evans for a service, after noticing a problem with the front derailer, they tell me they have fixed this, I pay them £45, it becomes apparent that they have made it much worse.

Do I have a leg to stand on? Or should I just email in a bitchy manner.

    Re: Consumer Rights for Servicing?

If they haven't performed the work in satisfactory nmanner (ie fulfilled the terms of the contract) take it back to them to do it properly.

You paid them to fix the problem they haven't done so.

They've made it much worse, as the rear won't now engage the extremity gears. So I've no interest in letting them near it again, not over so little cash.

I feared I had little option if I didn't give them a chance to rectify their mistakes, but simply it got a lot worse last time, and its not worth letting them ruin the bicycle any further for so little.

    Re: Consumer Rights for Servicing?

Supply of Goods and Services Act is your friend here, specifically s13 - the implied term of Reasonable Care & Skill. Theoretically, you can get the bike re-adjusted at another supplier, and claim that cost back from Evans, though you'd likely have to use the small claims track of the High Court to do so (Moneyclaim online, basically).

You'd be better off taking it back to Evans and getting them to readjust it again - perhaps a different branch/person doing the work and they'll get it right. I'd expect it to be done FOC as they've not got it right in the first place.

    Re: Consumer Rights for Servicing?

Just take it back and moan. Evans as with any medium sized chain will be prone to the odd cockup but I've never come across anyone who hasn't had a satisfactory outcome from them after a bit of negotiation.

But really Alex- £45 for a bike service?! I know you're cash rich and time poor, but bike maintenance is genuinely a piece of cake and a rather satisfying way to spend an hour or two. You can do most things with a few allen keys and spanners, and even the specialised tools you need for, say, removing bottom brackets and cassettes are pretty trivially cheap (Lidl recently did a more or less complete kit for about 25 quid). Any time you want a lesson ride yr bike down to me (SE London) with a bottle of scotch in your backpack and I'll be happy to oblige.

TBH, I can usually sort out most dodgy shifting problems without recourse to any tools whatsoever, because there are cable adjusters on the shifters themselves!

    Re: Consumer Rights for Servicing?

When you say the most extreme gears, do you mean running in gear 1-9 (or 1-10)/3-1, because these gears will put extra sideways stress on the chain increasing the chance of it snapping under pressure, and causing extra strain on it.

I would never advise anyone uses evans, since after my dad bought a bike there it had the chain incorrectly set up, causing it to snap on the first ride, and when my brother bought a bike from there the handle bars were not tightened to the correct torque, meaning that they actually came loose on the first ride, and he had a quite bad crash...

I've sent a couple of emails, sadly I don't have time to go in person.

I used to service my bike entirely myself, I know which end of the chain break tool is to be used, the only thing I'm useless with is re-spoking, tried it once, had to buy a new wheel lol.

The problem is that I could drop the bicycle with them at 9am, and pick it up at 6:30pm, ready to cycle 20 miles.

I couldn't find the time to do that myself.

Also I lack a cycle stand, last time It was a broom + mop, with some bungies.... It wasn't the best.

So its a Gen Day 2, with 105s, 10 x 2. What started to happen if I used gear 1-2 or 8-10 on the rear, they wouldn't engage. Then the front derailer just wouldn't engage one. The front derailer looked a bit bent, so I tried shaping it back, then the chain just fell off if i put a lot of pressure on, regardless of gear at the rear, this would happen in 2 on the front, it would slide off on to the crank. I think I made the derailer worse.

So after it had come off twice, I realised I should check the chain, without a chain measuring tool I thought I'd drop it off and let someone do it for me. Whilst £45 is extortion, for a location just 2 minuites from bank, I'm not complaining!

I've got it booked in with a very good place in East Finchley, I trust them to only suggest a new derailer if its needed!

Thing is I'm off on holiday for a fortnight tomorrow, and wanted to be able to keep up my training program (300+ miles a week), sadly I didn't do much on Sat even with the absolutely glorious weather, I was just scared to really tare it up hills.
