    Re: Maldives - "Always Natural"

With over 300,000 people and loads of tourists every year, where do you think all the waste goes?? Maldives has six times the population density figures of Kent and moreover a large number of the islands are tiny meaning most of the population is located on the larger islands,ie, actual population density is much higher.

That is how far away Maldives is from India and Sri Lanka. You are talking 340KM to India and 700KM to Sri Lanka by sea. Do you really think they can afford to get the waste sent to one of those countries? Where is the land and the money to have recycling plants then??

So tell me how you would solve it then?? Yes,it is not a nice sight, but so is any rubbish dump and the environmental damage it does. Its terrible TBH.

However,if the UK cannot solve its own waste issues being one of the richest countries on the planet, with a high level of technology and more empty space, how does a country like Maldives do so,especially when they need to import nearly everything at extra cost and have very limited space.

Tourism might be a major contributor to their economy, but have you even considered a lot of that waste might be down to things need for the tourist industry,ie,foreigners wanting amenities on holiday. The thing is that without the foreign currency brought in by tourism, the only thing that they can sell is fish. Without foreign exchange, the country cannot do much, and even for basic things like importing fuel it is not cheap.

Moreover, they could live like they did hundreds of years ago more sustainably, but when people see the rest of the world with what they have, they also want a piece of the action, whether it is good for the environment or not. The same happens in any country.

In the long term it is not good at all,but how many people are willing to reduce their standard of living??

The only way to solve it would be reduce the population, for the people to live like the old ways and cut all the tourists to the island. I don't see either happening.

Living on smaller islands leads to its own set of problems.

I personally think we should be looking in to automated waste disposal convoys to the moon.... and I'm not joking. There has already been some research around it and I think as a planet we should be looking to protect what unspoilt land we have left, and the only way I can see of us beginning to saturate the impact we've had on this planet is by offsetting it to our closest neighbour, which has nothing to loose other than maybe a couple of massive craters that we could fill.

Certainly a pretty disturbing sight to see what you perceive such a beautiful group of islands having to deal with waste in such an archaic way.

I've had a similar idea for nuclear waste in the past, firing it into the sun, since it's low in volume and hard to process. For general rubbish the cost to get it out of the earths' atmosphere would be astronomical (!) because of the many thousands of tons of rubbish we produce (300 tons/day just to that one landfill site according to the video).
I don't mean to sound cold, or cruel, or vicious, but I am so that's the way it comes out.
