enjoy yourself - going to catch some snow in NZ?
you should see if you can get routing to honolulu for a laugh - it's great this time of year. water clarity is exceptional, especially as you won't be getting much swimming done in NZ! Let me know where you're heading in NZ and I'll give you some ideas.
oooh - are you flying airnz? - if so - here's some hints...
if you don't already have airnz airpoints (wouldn't bother with united - they don't have an alliance with virgin) ask for an application form on the plane - then you'll accumulate enough miles on the outbound leg for a couple of internal flights in NZ - saves some money - and on the leg home, you'll have enough for a free european flight with BMI.
Must visit prawn farm in taupo - it's a good laugh, and a good feed. indonesian prawns - pretty expensive (not compared to a decent feed over here) but can get a kilo of prawns to take away and cook on the bbq wherever you're staying (unless it's a hotel) - I got some for new years day brunch, they pack them with ice in a little styrofoam chilli bin - quite a groovy service, and their restaurant is excellent.
while there, head around to kuratau (spelling?) on the opposite side of the lake - it's a bit backwards, but it's a quick jump to ruapehu where you can get some good skiing - and there's some awesome trout fishing there too. to warm up, there are the some hot springs at tokaanu (turn off to state highway 47 to ruapehu), which look a little dodgy - but they're excellent. get some cheezels and feed them to the trout in the river (the river is protected, and volcanic - so you'll see it steaming) quite a laugh.
turangi is where to go to find a fishing guide (it's on the way to kuratau) but it's also worth heading up north to the bay of islands.
you might as well stay on the more wintery areas, as you won't be getting much time in the water - but Mount Maunganui is quite good fun - in summer population quadruples to about 80000, but in winter it's pretty dead... but the dolphin watching, diving and fishing is great all year round. the mount is really the only place to go for that, it's accessible to auckland. it's good for 2-3 amusement tops.
