    x box 2?

Not sure where to post this so sorry if it's in the wrong area.

i'm intrested in buying an Xbox (spent most of last night on halo and love it!)

but i'm unsure if this is a good time to buy one. does any one know when the X box 2 is out and will it be compatible with Xbox 1 games?

Buy one and modify it, Xbox 2 is still only in development will be a while off yet.
I imagine they would be compatible but who needs to worry if it is modded?

a modded xbox? nowhere legally. new EU laws make mod chips illegal, because they hurt the feelings of big companies.

If you also install a large hard drive afterwards you can install all your linux distros to the hard drive and you wont need dvd's anymore.
Try to make sure that the xbox you get has a samsung dvd reader in it.
Look online to be able to tell the difference, otherwise the linux distros on burned cdr's wont work in the xbox.

you can burn them onto CD-r/w

I run a linux based media player on mine.

It pulls all my music off a back end media server.

I dont own any games at all so its not worried me.

The cromwell bios does not play them anyways ( wont play unsigned code )

The is a very clevel project to run an open source development kit which will be great for the homebrew community.

That's too bad, I mean what about all the other old games? and not to mention all the money behind them..of course if you can afford to have em' both at the same time..then you've got no problems. But for some people..maybe they have to sell the old console just to be able to afford the new one..although maybe they can sell the old games too, trade them away or something..

So maybe I'm not getting anywhere with this..or maybe I am? I'm sleepy.

Well, if you have to sell the old console and the game with it..you would surely miss some old game! I know I would miss some of them..if I had to trade them away..or something.

I mean I miss some old comp. stuff that I've traded/sold away..they would be so great to have now! That'd be so cool! I mean nowdays..people would kill to get em'.

And since this thread is about console games..i have a friend that would love to get his old SNES game back. Although he sold it..

Well, I hope you'll get may point..sorry, I'm off to bed in a sec.

Last I heard was a no on the backward compatiblity front, mainly due to the x-box 2 not having a hard drive. As for when the X-Box 2 or Xenon is going to be out, best bet for a UK release is sometime later next year. Latest speculation is that the unveiling will be in Jan '05:
It has been revealed that Microsoft is no longer planning on hosting an X04 conference in Europe this year. Instead, MS has chosen to concentrate on “individual country activity”. So instead of gathering together half-pickled journalists in surroundings as salubrious as Pierre Cardin’s villa in the south of France (which saw host to the X01 event), this year’s promotional activity is more likely to take place in distinctly less glamorous locales.

That's not to say that there won’t be sufficient Xbox projects worthy of promotion. Halo 2, Forza Motorsport, Fable and Jade Empire are all waiting to put in an appearance. It will just be relatively low key compared to previous events. At this stage, Microsoft hasn’t offered an official reason for this downplay.

In addition, it has recently been suggested that Bill Gates is planning to unveil Xbox 2 during his keynote speech at the International Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas at the beginning of January 2005. This does seem entirely plausible, as Microsoft readily admits its intention to pre-empt its competitors with the next generation launch, and the first MS console was also revealed at a previous ICES event.

When these two pieces of news are viewed side by side, it’s a strong indication that Microsoft is preparing to close one chapter and open the next. As Nintendo and Sony are working to extend the lifespan of their existing consoles, via new peripherals and price-cuts respectively, it would seem that Microsoft is fully intent on shifting its vast resources behind the next console project.
Nobody knows how much support the X-Box will get after the Xenon has been released so I'd be carefull with it being Microsoft, they might only have a little support with the odd game coming out.
