Mice - getting rid and keeping rid

Last winter we had lots of mice in our loft which we used the inhumane poison as there seemed no easy way of getting rid of them. However worse than that I found one scruuying across our dining room floor to our kitchen yesterday where I think at the moment I have it trapped.

Please can anyone tell me how I can get rid of it! Also how can I stop more mice coming this winter. We don't have amucky house, nor do we have gaps everywhere for them to get in but they still manage it!!

    HELP!!!

    Buy a cat.

:edit: Sorry, just thought, that wasn't very helpful... Try traps, as poison is, as you say, inhumane. Traps are instant and you know where the bodies are. If you use poison (a slow one) they can run off and die somewhere difficult to get to and your house will soon stink.

Have used fen traps on rats before, but would be overkill on mice. They are basically a bloody great big spring trap that goes of when the entire animal is inside, as they are not leg hold they are legal in the UK.

Cats are not very effective at killing mice, and mice are not any more likely to run into a trap baited with cheese. These are both myth's popularised by that evil pair Tom & Jerry.

My cat was very good at catching mice (and birds) my Aunt (who lives in the county) is regularly throwing out dead mice that the cats around there catch.

And traps with cheese just doesn't work, use chocolate, it attracts them much better!

:edit: Sorry, Flibb beat me to that last comment! I should read the whole thread before posting!

Some cats are good yes, but you can't just buy a cat, and expect to wake up the next moring to a scene from the mouse version of Platoon. They tend to get one and play with it, not the best for sorting out an infestation.

I've found the best bait is a Findus Crispy Pancake with a smiliy face drawn on it in crayon.

as stated chocolate is the choice for mice they lap it up, we had some in our cupboards early this year we tried the normal traps but when it went bang the mice exploded in the draws :/ so we bought those humane ones, they are white blastic, they trap the mouses head in the trap around the neck but it wont kill them just knocks em for 6 at that point you can release them but if you want rid for good, poison lace chocolate is your best bet. Thing is you dont really need a big gap for them to get in, if they can get in the floor boards or your foundations you will be surprised how easily they can work their way through the walls to the loft. We had the same problem

flibb is right, rodents would DIE for chocolate! get your hands on a few humane mouse traps and put a piece of chocolate in each of them. My hamster escaped a couple of months ago and my mum borrowed a mouse trap from her work (she works in the university research dept) and they recommended chocolate as a bait and sure thing, it worked like a dream

We have a humane trap, you put food at the end, the mouse walks in knocking the bar and the door shuts behind them. Only ever killed 1 mouse (left the trap for 2 weeks when i went on holiday, i felt so evil )

make sure you check the humane trap regularly tho mate. we put one in my parent's shed, baited it with bacon and promtly forgot about it. found it about a month later and there was a mouse in there, but only its bones, tail and a bit of skin was left. not too pleasant lol
