    Which would you do...?

    Hi all,

I've got a bit of a dilemma ahead, although it's a very good one, and fortunate too.

At present I have a custom modded SB51G Shuttle, running a 2.26 P4 768mb RAM and a GF4 Ti4800SE... amongst all the other normal things like cd-rw/ dvd combo...

Now with my work, every year you can pick a heavily reduced top spec PC, or laptop. For instance, last years scheme their was a 3ghz, 1gb ram laptops... for £1k - less than half the RRP.

Now, they also do top spec desktop PC's, which includes flatscreen monitor, nice looking base unit... again around 3Ghz 1gb ram was last years spec. The good thing about the offer is that you can pay interest free credit on them, and it automatically comes out of your pay packet each month.

I'm definately going to be taking up the offer... but which do I buy? The laptop, or the PC?

The laptops good for portability around the house, the desktop PC would be an ideal replacement for the Shuttle... I will be selling my PC, monitor inc if I got the desktop...

    Gah!! decisions decision!! :-/

Depends if you'd actually use the laptop much. I used to have one and mostly it sat on my desk.

If you go for the desktop, you could sell your Shuttle and it would cover part of the cost of the new comp. But if you're going to get serious use out of a laptop, I'd probably have one of those.

Like MAS said, it depends how much you'd use the laptop. If you can't think of any times it would be more convinient than a desktop, then you may as well just get the desktop. It also depends on whether you're happy keeping the shuttle, or whether it's in need of an upgrade.

If it were decision, I'd opt for the desktop, but then again I have no need for a laptop.

Why not get the desktop and buy a cheap laptop with the money you get when you sell the Shuttle?

I'm a believer is low-ish spec laptops because even the highest spec ones can't really compete with a desktop of half the price, and I only use my laptop for 2D windows stuff, its a couple of years old now but still hardly ever breaks into a sweat.

    Cheers for all your replies.

The desktop PC would be around the £1k mark.. and it was top spec for last October. A laptop would be useful for recording from my decks... but I can see no other use for it. You seem to get much more performance and features (flat screen etc) with the desktop, than a laptop.

IME there are plenty of other devices that are smaller, cheaper, and easier to use for recording like that. I just found using a laptop a chew-on. Or you could get some extension cables, depending on how far away your desktop is.
