    Skanky PC's

    Hey all,

As an I.T. monkey who visits external customers, I often see some fairly minging PC's. This one from a couple of days ago was particularly nasty. There's no way I was going to stick my dongle in that port!

I gave my hands a pretty good wash after touching that keyboard too. I reckon Saddam could've developed his biological weapons program from keyboards like this. Yuk.

Any other IT guys on the forum who encounter similarly rank PC's/servers during the course of a day?

Hmmm. Beige. Last manufactured in 2002. Pretty much anything beige is either going to be pristine because it was never used in the first place, or WARNING! (beep) WARNING! (beep) WARNING! crudtrap.

How can you have a day job using that thing and not decide that perhaps it's time to clean it?

That keyboard looks pretty clean compared the one I just replaced at my mates garage. It was so bad that when you pressed a key, you could could watch it in slow motion return back up.

I'll always remember the day I was asked to clean out the laptops in my schools DT department, years of exposure to mdf fibers and schoolkids had made them pretty unpleasant XD

    Re: Skanky PC's

Smokers PC's are the worst and I say that as a smoker myself. Opening one of those up after a few years is like licking an ash tray. I've been in a couple that must of been 10 years old, they were just horrific. Not just the smell either, all the tar and crud in the smoke sticks to the dust and gums up the whole thing.

Lol, I'm glad it's not just me that finds these nasty pc's. Particularly like the bit about the keys that come back up in slow motion.

Reminds me of one of those time-release films, like a loaf of bread going mouldy or something.. a bit more time and those ports would just go back to nature & close over altogether..

    Re: Skanky PC's

I'll admit I'm a bit OCD when it comes to cleanliness of my PC's. I often use compressed air canisters to blow the crud out of my keyboard at work, and am always cleaning the screen on the laptop at home to get rid of the nipper's paw prints

I always hear about using air compressed cans.. Would using a hoover be bad?

    Re: Skanky PC's

twice now when I have had to go to do software installs on computers for one of the contracts we hold I have been back to the van and grabbed a pair of the latex gloves we carry for printer repairs. both times the students have looked at me like they stepped on me but didn't dare say a thing, one then complained to the office during the courtesy call after each one that i wore gloves, The girl on the phone said he must have had a good reason to do so on the grounds of health and safety.

dirty bastards to say the least.

    Re: Skanky PC's

Had similar but different a few weeks back.

Bought a ZX Spectrum +2A from eBay, the keys and case were covered in that horrible black stuff and it stunk of old dust and Nicotene and I smoke myself and could smell it all over the first floor of my house. The dust inside the machine with thick matted yellow color. Had to use Cif to clean the case and all the insides and even after that could still smell it, had to repeat the process twice before the smell went away.

Then when cleaning the tape heads with Isopropyl alcohol and a cotton bud, it was thick yellow that came off the head, normal use you get a tiny bit which is to be expected with any magnetic media, you could actually see the Nicotene on the silver head it was that bad.

Thankfully now a few weeks later and cleaned the entire system and inside power brick the smell has finally gone, the machine looks almost brand new now though after the TLC I gave it!
