Free Blu-Ray players for LoveFilm customers

Amazon are killing support for 2010-era Samsung smart TVs, such as the C650 and C750 series. Surprisingly enough, they're giving a free Samsung smart 3D Blu-Ray player, BD-F6500, to LoveFilm customers using one of these TVs.

Keep an eye on your inbox, if that means you.

I presume here they are no longer supporting the network connection on your TV, so they are giving you a box with a network connection that will still work?

But otherwise, yes people do use shiny media sometimes.

Never mind shiny media, some of us still use large black plastic discs with grooves for music, and like it.

As for video, yes, shiny media. If I want something badly enough to pay for it, I want a disc I can use when it suits ME, not what boils down to a rental. Even back in the says of videotape, I wasn't a fan of rental. So paying for a rental download? Nope, not me. Long live shiny media.

Sound, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. Or behearer, in this case. Personally, I find a warmth in vinyl and CDs a bit, erm, clinical. But then, they also have a marked lack of noise that LPs tend to have.

But I'd no more tell you they sound "better" than I'd say brand A of speakers is "better" than brand B (assuming reasonable parity in quality, of course) though I may well tell you I prefer brand A to B, and why. Or that choral classical is better than jazz .... though IMHO, it us. You'll often find me listening to ciassical, but my taste in jazz is FAR more limited. But, I like what I like, including both Bach and LP's. And, fir that matter, shiny media over downloads. What you like is, well, whatever you like. No right or wrong, just preferences. And that's how it should be, of course.

By the way, the colour blue is better than yellow, too.

Oh I would happily say that LPs sound better than CD. Many years ago I compared a few thousand worth or Roksan DP1 with a cheap Dual record player, and was stunned how much the record player sounded noticeably better. Tried them with a few albums where we had it on CD and LP. I know the engineering reasons behind it (the sample frequency on CD is just too low, people talk about the nyquist point but the response is dropping off well before then).

I still use CDs though. LPs are such a hassle, even though I know they sound better frankly I can't be bothered with all the brushing and cleaning they need to sound good.

Oh, and green for the win

Agree with all that, but there are a number of other factors, like the variability of the listener's ears, and the susceptibility of LP's to wear, and damage, especially if used on, how do I put it, less 'refined' equipment than Roksan, and similar quality gear. LPs inherently degrade over time, whereas with decent care, CDs should last more or less indefinitely. And that's why I never lend LPs. Because I take care of mine, and use decent equipment, and won't risk what others use .... not that many people want to borrow these days.

Don't get me wrong, I love LPs .... but they have downsides, and not just lack of convenience. Which is why I hesitate to use 'better'. How an LP sounds when new, and how it sounds after 100 or 500 plays, may well be different, and the subjective effect on the listeners of pops and clicks is assessed varies from person to person.

And green's nice, yeah, but not a patch on blue.

Going to get even further off track here, but okay, I'll bite.

Custard. Right. Hot custard, okay I s'pose, so 4/10. Cold custard? Spawn of the devil. Foul, revolting concoction.

Who'd have believed we could get from free Blu-ray players to custard. But you'll notice that even players have good enough taste to have Blu rays, not Yello rays.

Custard? Cold is okay, hot is yuk.

Vinyl? Cracks and pops drive me nuts. Never mind the hassle of keeping them clean, dropping the needle at the right point, tiptoeing round the room to stop it skipping etc etc Even back in the olde days when there was no choice I used cassettes with their horrible hiss or Dolby sound-deadening.

    Triple Philistine.

    Just kidding.

Good job weren't not all just clones of each other, eh?

I was watching a documentary on TV a few days ago about how supermarkets operate. Apparently, they track what each and every shopper buys, and the typical shopper only ever buys something like 150 different product lines. But they have to stock something like 3000-4000 product lines because which 150 we buy is different for everyone. You like brand A of yoghurt, I like brand B, Dareos doesn't like yoghurt at all and DancesWithUnix makes his own. Or whatever. Wonderful world, innit?

PS. For clarity, I don't remember the exact numbers, but it was something on that order of scale.

There is an element of that as well. I don't have that many records left, and those few I don't want ruined. I think side-a of one my my favourites is starting to sound a big mushy Perhaps I need a deck better than the £100 Dual I bought at Richer Sounds when I was a student. They were real pounds then mind

Oh, I have a blue car BTW. Though I did want a red one. Blue looks very smart, but people tend not to see you. Silver is boring, and you just can't find green ones. Green cars are excellent, specially if it's a Stratos

Re: Free Blu-Ray players for LoveFilm customers

    @Dances ...

I have most of my albums copied, and I've done some og my own digital 'enhancement'. That is, declicked, etc, using CoolEdit Pro. So, I only use the LP is I'm really listening, as in, sat down and explicitly listening as my primary activity. If it's for background music while I'm working, or washing up, or whatever, then I use either that processed version on CD, or a digital file froma PC or MP3 player.

The reason is, partly, convenience, but mainly, because of wear avoidance, even with a pretty good deck (Mitchell Electronic Reference, currently with an SME arm and, IIRC, Stanton MC cartridge, or maybe the Satin MC, though I do change cartridges, and even arm, from time to time). And I've had that deck since the late 70s, IIRC, and both it and arm/cartridge were real, real pounds, even then.

Part of taking care of LPs, for me, is only using them when I'm actually going to hear the difference .... mainly because they'd be hard, and sometimes impossible, to replace.
