According to Greek mythology, Tantalus offended the Gods and was condemned to a torment of standing in a pool where if he bent to drink, the waters would receed, and if he reached out to pluck the lucious fruits hanging from the trees above his head a wind would blow the branches out of reach.
From his name and his torment we now have the word 'tantalize'.
