Small bits of plastic for PC modding?

Does anyone know where I can get a couple of small bits of clear plastic?

I need some acrylic, perspex or similar, about 6" x 1", no thicker than 3mm, one in red and one in grey/smoked.
Loads of places do large sheets, but no-one has anything small.

Is it that you're hoping to get something to the exact size.. A5 sheets on ebay etc are cheap enough, not much waste there & allows for any cutting errors.. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GENUINE-CO...item27d92f1f30

Re: Small bits of plastic for PC modding?

Most places will have a minimum ordering size, but there are plenty of places that will get close to what you want. You'll just have to make one cut to produce the finished size which is not hard to do.

I quick google for "acrylic sheets small" brings up many places.

    Eg: http://www.sheetplastics.co.uk/Acryl...roduct_id=1317

    So a tinted grey sheet 153mm (6") x 51mm (2") sheet is £1.00.

Cut that in half and you have the size you want. Same cost for the red. Looks like P&P is extra depending on weight.

Here's another place that has custom cuts but with a minimum of 50mm (2"). http://www.acrylic-online.co.uk/index.php (Christ their delivery costs are huge though!)

The only other thing to do is to ring up or email one of these types of companies and ask them. They must have off-cuts from other jobs that will be chucked into a bits and bobs box.

The exact size will be the same as the front plate on the tray (not the surrpunding faceplate) of my DVD drive.

Actually, it was mainly the delivery costs that were causing me problems, especially as their "free" samples still cost £18!!
I've had clothing shipped from America for less postage money than that!!

For that same reason, I'm loath to even ask what the postage would be on their off-cuts...

Check out http://razorlab.co.uk/ if you want laser cut stuff. Fast and not expensive too. Their smallest size is 181 x 181 mm / 7.1 x 7.1 in.

Re: Small bits of plastic for PC modding?

Honestly it'll be cheaper to buy a generic piece of acrylic sheet (pre-cut) and cut and modify it yourself.

Look on eBay, you'll find most acrylic sheets of that size are dirt cheap.

    charity shop and pound land

look for cheap picture frames.. bet they're not all glass!

Also Wilkinsons or QD store.. look in gardening section for the little green house things that go over pot plants

Car boot sales.. and free cycle

think of things that have the clear plastic, go get it cheap or free, take what you need bin the rest

Free samples are never free nor will off-cuts be free. Time is money.

I needed 3 capacitors. The total cost for capacitors was less than £1. The cost for a company to get a man to walk round to a couple of bins and pick out 3 capacitors and then put them in a jiffy bag and then print out a label and stick the label on the jiffy bag and then put a couple of stamps on the jiffy bag and then post the jiffy bag and then bill me...

...was more than £12 anywhere I looked.

In the end I bought the minimum of 5 capacitors of each kind, which were posted to me, in separate packets, for about £5 total. It wasn't worth my time or money to phone another company or drive to Maplins to pick up the same capacitors for a few pennies less. It wasn't worth the company's time to accommodate me unless I ordered their minimum number of capacitors which turned out to be cheaper than a custom one off "pick".

You need to do one of two things:

    1. Talk to some one. e.g. "Oh hi, I'm really sorry to bother you, but someone recommended you for a tiny job I'm doing. You see I'm making a custom PC case that is going to be raffled in aid of a charity to help a 3 year old get flown to the US for medical treatment. What I wanted was two 6"x1" bits of plastic to cover the DVD slots in the PC case. I used your website and was really happy to see that the I could get what I wanted for £2, but the P&P is £??? for two 6" bits of plastic, which seems a bit much. I know it's probably not really worth you doing but I'd really appreciate it. Is there any chance you could perhaps do me a really big favour and just pop the two bits of plastic in a jiffy bag and write the name and address on and send it 2nd class? It's for a really good cause. Cheers.

That's called a blag by the way.

    2. DIY. Buy 1 A4 sheet of red acrylic for £5. Buy 1 A4 sheet of smoked/grey acrylic for £5. Buy a ruler. Buy a scribe or marker pen. Buy a hacksaw. Mark out the size you want and cut it.

That's called manning the **** up!

It was red or smoked that I needed. Been trying to think of anything that had either of those but just came up blank, hence asking here.

Pretty much what I've settled on.
I went round B&Q, Homebase, Wickes, Maplin, Hobbycraft, various art shops, even theatrical places that do lighting filters. None had anything like what I was looking for... Found a reasonable p&p one on Amazon in the end.
