    Anyone knowledgeable about watches?

A distant relative passed away not so long ago, and an Omega Seamaster watch was given to me. It was given to me on the basis that I do with it what I wish, and that I should sell it to help out with driving lessons (which is what I plan to do with it). I own 4 watches at the age of 18 already, 2 citizen, 1 accurist and 1 G-Shock, so as you can tell I'm not a super watch fan - I just like ones that look good

Anywho, I believe it's an Omega Seamaster, however I've no idea what model it is exactly. It'll be roughly 1980s, I think. It was given to my grandmothers uncle for 35 years of service with a company.

    Pictures:

What do you people think it's worth? It is engraved on the back of the watch.

Shows how much I pay attention! Cheers. I've heard that Americans tend to be big fans of old Omegas, not sure how true this is, however. Don't really fancy posting this abroad if I'm honest.

    Re: Anyone knowledgeable about watches?

It's always tough to say things like that.
Condition would be important, does it work, is it accurate, when was the last service, does it need one.
    Is the strap origional?

But it's going to be really tough, for a start there's probably no way of knowing how the engraving will effect the value.
If you've got any watch makers near you it may be worth asking them for any ideas and get a price from them for servicing too. *Edit, i see the model is quartz, that should mean you'll almost certainly get away without a service. (although not defenate) also means the price is going to be lower. Quartz are not as desirable, although being an omega it will still get interest.

    Lets hope Bsodmike knows......

    Re: Anyone knowledgeable about watches?

It's a quartz movement so it should be fairly accurate, as the crystal resonators are generally speaking always far more accurate than the most elaborate mechanical watch. So that shouldn't be an issue.

I'd have thought the biggest issue was the fact it's got an engraving on the back.

The other thing is, this watch isn't like anything else in your collection of watches, it isn't really a watch, this is a kind of jewellery.

A quick search on ebay shows that Omega Jubilees from the 80s are going for around £400, this is a similar series, but yours is a less common design:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/18ct-SOLID...item461dfbf6e2 (I believe this to be the same engine, but will let mike confirm )

However, whilst the gold strap alone would be worth £100 if its in good condition, I think most people prefer black leather with todays dress style, other parts of the world this isn't true.

As a result, if you aren't in a rush, £500 would be a very achievable figure, but the engraving would change things a bit. This obviously is with a fresh battery and proof it's working.

Thanks to StevieLee & TheAnimus for their great input and tracking the ref. down.

And by gold I'm sure you mean't 'gold-plated' based on your estimate. This would be a very nice dress piece if you switched it onto a decent leather strap.

As for selling it off, TheAnimus has done a great job in advising you already. That ebay Listing he pointed you to is for an 18k model, not a gold-plated watch, so that's something to consider as well.

Considering it appears to be in decent nick, 300-400 quid would be rather fair. Some might argue that you can get an 18k piece on leather for similar change, but there's nothing stopping you from holding out till you find the right buyer.

I would be a good idea to check around for an estimate on having it serviced by Omega so you can inform any potential buyers, should they wish to do so.

    Good luck with the sale!

    Re: Anyone knowledgeable about watches?

You'll find a much wider audience on eBay - couple tips - provide as much info about the watch. I'd suggest you screenshot that link to Omega which details everything about this reference.

Include many photos, closeups etc. taken in clear light. Do not use flash photography; take snaps in the garden near dawn - that's the best lighting.

Provide a means for contact -email, phone etc. Throw it into an auction and set a decent 'reserve' or alternatively (cheaper!) set the auction's starting price to the level you want (without reserve) - that way you won't be charged for setting a reserve price, but the high starting price will deter proliferate bidding.

That said, you'll find a more educated audience on watch forums such as Watchprosite.com and other watch communities. These have 'for sale' sections and your reach here will be worldwide.

You can also go see a high street dealer - there are many in the UK; reflecting on my time in London, Burlington Arcade was an old haunt of mine - many watch dealers there. The downside is that they will offer you the 'least' for the watch. You'll get the most by making it a direct sale to another buyer. That said, selling to a dealer means quick cash over the counter.

There was a time when I was young (and impatient!) and sold a sports Rolex worth £2,000 for £1,400/- to a dealer on the Strand, so I could upgrade to the 'next best' thing that same day... Mine also had an engraved caseback (which I had Rolex perform), which drove the price down a bit.

However, dealing online, you need to be quite careful. Use secured means for accepting payment, such as PayPal (move the funds to your bank first), before shipping and only delivery RMSD/DHL with a tracking no/insurance.

    Hope these points help!
