Been offline for a bit - they ever find that missing airplane? I can't seem to find any news on it from recent weeks other than some guy claiming it was shot down by N Korea off the coast off Vietnam... Surely not?

As far as discussion is concerned, it has brought out the subject as to whether planes should be fitted with something more modern than a black box (e.g. something that live streams the data) which is being proven to be difficult and expensive to find - as well as not completely indestructible (9/11).
black boxes will need to stay whether or not they live stream - removes the chance of someone nefariously disrupting the streaming to hide some sinister intent.
Interesting to think that the black boxes came about due to the early comet jet liners dropping out the sky and disintegrating in flight! Killed off the UK jet industry that one, and it was only cos we were first out the gate with the tech, Boeing admit they didn't know it would happen either, but got lucky with the findings and were able to mod their 707 in time...
I read a comment by a marine engineer saying that he was surprised planes weren't, like ships, fitted with devices which release and float when in the water.
Sounds like a smart idea.
Although boats don't tend to explode, nor are they at the risk of high-impact collisions, so maybe that's why there's a difference. After this situation I'm sure someone is going to have to make it happen, though.
No trees were harmed in the creation of this message. However, many electrons were displaced and terribly inconvenienced.
My understanding is that the black boxes did not survive the crash. That's not to say there aren't people shouting conspiracy anyway (about how the blackbox did not survive yet they found the passport of a hijacker). I don't think many are calling for black boxes to be removed, but some are at least suggesting supplementing it with live streaming tech.
Who is responsible? The plane owner. Nobody monitors the black boxes 24/7, and in the same way remote telemetry would just be stored on disc until needed. The only difference is that *if* you need it, you know where it is. Beyond that, you could set up some automatic alarm rules. If a plane stops streaming when other around it are fine, flag it up. If voice recognition says that the steward is screaming "we're all going to die" then best flag that up too. I'm sure other rules could be thought up, but first you need the infrastructure to get the data to mine.
I think everyone has forgotten about the plane apart from the rescue workers and CNN...
