    Question What do you collect?

Here's a question for the hoarders of Hexus

I've been wanting to ask this for a while, but I'm trying to save money and don't need a load of new temptations. And I thought I'd let the "box keeping" thread run its course a bit more. I read an article today on the BBC that reminded me of my old Panini football sticker albums back in the 90s (worth a read: http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-27051215 ) so thought I'd ask what you like to acquire before trawling eBay tonight

I'm a typical hoarder. I hate throwing things away, and if I have something that belongs in a "set", I have to get them all.

Probably started with the football stickers, then got given a "Stamp collecting starter kit", and then got given my grandads coin collection. From then I was always on the lookout for things to add to my collections.

As an adult, I've been collecting old computers/consoles for the last 10 years or so in case they are one day "worth something". Got 2 MINT boxed Sega Multi-Megas that are still doing silly money, but I have found I can't bring myself to selling them now. I've actually slowed down on that collection as they take up a lot of space, but I have no plans to shrink it. I did throw away one of my Dreamcasts (raided for spare bits for my other 2..), which was painful despite how useless it was.

I first visited America about 5 years ago and as soon as I saw they had a different 25c coin for each state - I had to collect those as well. Almost ruined my holiday, but I did get them all with a little help!

One of the places I spent a lot of time (and money) in was Las Vegas, where a few "souvenir" chips from the tables have exploded in to my current collection of Casino chips from around the world, approaching 1000 pieces. I tend to go on holiday to places with casinos now just to extend my collection.

    So, what have you got?

    Re: What do you collect?

I'm not much of a collector. Since my childhood I've tried to form an interest in collecting a few different things but I lose focus. There is one thing, though, which I do enjoy and of which I'm always happy to receive more as gifts - mugs.

I didn't start collecting intentionally but I really do enjoy having all sorts of mugs and try to take good care of them.

I don't have loads but they are the one 'collection' of items which I've taken note of and which, more and more, I find myself telling others to go ahead and buy for me if they ask me what I want for a gift.

So far, most of them are from places I've been or gift mugs for events, but I do love the official Superman mug I got as a gift once. I've also been eyeing this guy to add him to the collection: Eggs!

I collect winning lottery tickets. If anyone has any, just post them to me. It needs to be before they're cashed in and for the archiving purposes you need to enclose a description of when and where they were bought from.

Books - I collect one author - Lin Yutang. His "The Importance of Living" is my all time best read. Highly recommended for anyone who may be a little lost.

    Re: What do you collect?

I collect 8 & 16 Bit computers primarily, mainly C64 as that was my first main home computer. I do also collect for Spectrum & Amstrad CPC.

I do have Megadrive & SNES also but the games take up loads of space. I have have a few items also for my Amiga and Atari ST.

I use Colexions website to keep track of and have photos of everything I own. Just finished uploading my entire collection pictures there, it has taken weeks to do, thankfully now I just have to keep it updated as and when I get new stuff for my machines.

    http://colexions.com/?p=mypage&u=iaingrimm

There's the link to my profile there if you want to see just how much stuff I actually have. 90% of the C64 stuff there was purchased during the 80's and early 90's. I started collecting for the Spectrum last year (April) and started collecting for Amstrad around 2 months ago.

    Re: What do you collect?

I collect pandas, many, many, many pandas.

cuddly toy ones, pictures, wallpaper, ornaments, knick-knacks, socks, even a nodding panda for the back shelf of a car. 5 or 6 robot ones (when the batteries work) musical dancing ones.

couple of hundred at the last count

and it all started half an hour after I was born. my uncle gave me a nice fluffy cuddly panda, which ive since called 'panda', even made up family connections with all the other cuddly pandas I have. he has a little brother called bengy, uncle called yarrick (he's the 5 foot panda) little sister fizzy and so on and so on.
pandas been everywhere with me, every holiday i've been on, even to one of the GameOn Lans (he stayed in my bag, it was too scary for him to wander), hes been half way up snowden, ben nevis, swum in loch ness, even floated about in the sea a bit off the coast of angelsey after he slipped the safety rope.

yes I am a little childish inside*, but hes one of the family. you cant be serious 24 hours a day, need someway to unwind.

sister started a sword collection, but she mainly does star trek stuff. so she's a little bit more normal. (except for her few hundred pandas aswell )

I lost my Panda on a beach aged like 2 or maybe 3. There were tears. I can remember the emergency dash to boots to buy me a new panda. And though that fella is still alive and kicking, albeit infrequently brought out these days, I always wonder what came of the original Panda. The two were not 100% alike so far as the photos show. Sigh. Did I leave him in the hole I had dug, only for the tide to drown him? Did that little urchin kid who toddled over kidnap my bear? Did some passer by find a lonely panda lying on the sand and take him home? Did he even make it to another home or was he savaged by some crazed canine high on the salty air? Oh Panda... what became of you?

    Re: What do you collect?

I would say I collected Vinyl records for the specific music genre I listen to. Sometimes it means keeping a keen eye on the artists to see if they release very limited white labels/test presses.
