Having said that, I do wonder if there's really been progression or if, in fact, things have simply become more subtle and/or reversed so that it's now men who are the butt of the jokes. Might have to take a look around to see if that's the case.

Yes things have to an extent become reversed with men becoming the butt of jokes. However, advertising has become far more subtle and insidious especially when directed at women. The key difference now though is that it is no longer men vs. women per se, as was the case in the 50s etc. when men still figuratively ruled the roost. What we see is men vs. men and women vs. women. With the latter focusing on manipulation through fear and insecurity; especially in hygiene and personal care... anti aging creams and the like. Couple this with the shift to acceptance of subjective obsolescence rather than actual and you have a recipe for disaster...
