Reading into the article a little, it was an air display and he was probably flying relative low. Therefore, when faced with power loss you have much less time to react but at least you are in the vicinity of the airfield. By the sounds of it, he needed a few more seconds for the undercarriage to lock into place before landing. Had that happened, then I imagine the whole event probably wouldn't have even been reported. So in summary, given the situation, it was a skilled pilot to salvage the situation but being a display pilot, he would have to be anyway. I'm sure TheAnimus/TeePee and the other Hexus pilots will tell you given enough height and time to prepare, most pilots could land a plane with power loss. Personally, I only ever flew planes without an engine in the first place, so was never an issue for me!
It was at Culdrose, and luckily near the end of the show.

because I can now say.. that set of planes is jinxed. Apart from being butt ugly.. I have an old documentary about the pair of flyable Sea Fury planes and one pilot that broke both!
One of them, he had to land in a field on the way to a show.. and it was a MAMMOTH field.. and it slid.. into the only 2 trees in the middle of the field and ripped off both wings I remember.
prolly cos it's such an ugly plane
