Muslims use a lunar calendar and a new moon marks the start of a new month, simple right?
But no, people have to over complicate things, first there are certain rules, the new moon has to be sighted by two independent witnesses without the aid of any optical equipment, so for some using data provided by NASA doesn't count while others, such as those in Saudi Arabia feel it is fine to accept it.
Then we have to complicate things further by bringing politics into the mixture and then that opens up a whole new can of worms, as everyone likes to follow a particluar religious leader that interprets sings and readings differently to other leaders.
I like to keep it simple so I tend to go along with what the majority of my local mosque are doing, so if they start their fasting on a Friday I won't start on the Thursday or Saturday and at the end of the month I'll be ready to celebrate Eid with them rather than on my own. For us, we are celebrating Eid on the Sunday, but I know of a good number of people that celebrated on either the Friday or Saturday.

KBD - keeping it simple, the mans in Karachi, so I think I recall it being down to the time difference, hence it being Eid on Saturday there.
Bit belated, Eid Mubarak to all!
