So, I just downloaded and installed Grand Theft Auto, from God knows how many years ago; free download. Fired it up and... it runs jerky and slow, on the rig in my sig.
I feel this sums it up:
I mean, my X800XT-PE (overclocked I might add) unable to keep GTA running at a playable speed.
It's a bit wrong.

You can download GTA 2 now for free at Rockstar, seen it posted somewhere or other the other day in a news bit ! Apparently it has been updated so it will run on modern systems.

Yeah, but have you tried getting the server to do anything?
I must admit I cant stand the GTA games so I havnt even tried at all. Dont like them whatsoever, wether they are the origional 2 with their top down views or the new nice looking versions in 3D.
I do own GTA 3 and also Vice City (I suppose Vice City isnt to bad as I feel it has a bit more structure to it to be fair) but dont think I will be getting the new one at all unless I see it in a bargain bin or a preowned copy somewhere.

Probably something like a 2 Mb trident card (or equivalent) through a dos environment. Such power in the machines !

lol, its not ur gfx card, its the frame limiter rockstar added to the game to make it 'updated for newer pc's'
by pressing f8 (i think its f8) it disables the frame limiter, hold on to ur hat cuz it will make gta about 1000000 times too fast, even on my 9700 pro,
either way i was disse******ed as it wasnt enjoyable to play either way... tho i got it on the psx n e way
there's this really basic little tool called 'turbo' which you may find on emulation sites, it eats up cpu time.
gta ran okay on a 486 dx2, so set turbo to eat up the appropriate percentage of your cpu to leave 100 mhz' worth or so free
Used to run great on a 3dfx card.
The first was the best IMO.
I might download it and try it again out at some point.

you should try something like theme park on a machine faster than 486 (thats the OLD 486!). i thied it on a p3 500mhz and its as though everyone's on speed!! even at the slowest speed setting!

How come old games speed used to be based on the CPU speed, whereas now they all seem to run at the same speed, do they get the time from different places in the system now?
