    Mobile phone insurance

    Is it worth it?

Orange are adding £5 to my bill each month for insurance (which I asked them to do when I got my phone) but I'm wondering if it's really worth it. I've got a P800 which would be expensive to replace like-for-like if it was stolen/damaged, but on the same token I've had it since March and it's fine so far.

I don't mind paying the £5 but it would be nice not to. Any suggestions?

    Hmm...

I don't like paying for something you aren't using but I have lost a phone before and had to buy a new handset. If you aren't too bothered about what you get then it's not that expensive to buy a new one - esp. if you get a PAYG handset and get it unlocked. What I do now though is upgrade after 12 months to the newest (free) handset and keep the old handset at home just in case. Though obviously that ties you into your contract for another 12 months.

Yeah - if you've got a 'posh' phone then it's probably worth it. I've only got a 3510i so it doesn't matter much to me. See if you can add it on to your contents insurance for less that £60 / year (make sure you have a good idea how much a replacement handset would be and point out that you obviously want it covered out of the house as well as in it - they can be a bit thick sometimes!)

Don't forget you'll have an excess on your contents insurance (and probably not on the one Orange are giving you)

oranges insurance is the best there is. loose your phone and they will have a new one (including sim) to you in UNDER 24 HOURS FOR FREE. ive used this several times (im a little clumsey) - i think ive had 4 new phones off their insurance in 2 and a half years and they still come up trumps every time. phoned them up friday evening @ 8, new phone was on me doorstep by 9 the next morning. superb. dont cancel it.

Oh, I always thought that losing the phone wasn’t covered by insurance, which is why so many people seem to get “mugged” by and average height, average build person and just their phone taken?

    Insurance is good.

If you damage it or lose it, you get a new one ....

Have had one phone stolen and got that one replaced .... and managed to get it upgraded to a much better phone because that model was out of production.
