Just had an email from yahoo. Another data breach this time in 2014 and detected only in November 2016 and distinct from the one that made the news in September 2016. Check your accounts folks.

Doesn't surprise me. I get heaps of spam and phising emails "seemingly" from people I know - all of which use Yahoo.
I started the practice of using unique email addresses for each web-site I had to provide one for - so I can crack down on any spam. It seems actually, most of my spam comes from people with freebie email addresses that get hacked.
The email I had on Saturday stated that it had been reported to them in November 2016 and the breach had occurred in August 2013:
In November 2016, law enforcement provided Yahoo with data files which a third party claimed was Yahoo user data. We analysed this data with the assistance of external forensic experts and found that it appears to be Yahoo user data. Based on further analysis of this data by the forensic experts, we believe that an unauthorised third party stole data associated with a broader set of user accounts in August 2013
These hacks had to have been known about way before then. The internet is awash with various forums discussing issues from the users point of view such as spamming, acccount hi jacks etc and also discussion of the hacks. If yahoo didn't have any clue about it, then a lot of people need firing and to be honest it stinks of a heads in the sand approach or a cover up and the company needs prosecuting in the u.s courts.
I discovered the issue initially 3 years ago, maybe longer on one of two yahoo accounts I've run, then a year later the other followed. I suspect the only real reason this is even being discussed is the complete lists of compromised accounts and password hashes are being made readily available rather than being traded on the dark side of the web so yahoo has no choice but to go public. The biggest issue now for Yahoo is that the company is potentially worthless once this is dealt with. The level of dishonesty I suspect has been in play here would land you or I in prison, but the CEO of a large corporation like this will no doubt walk free with no issues.
