    B0rked PS2?

Since this is not Computer hardware I thought this would be the place to post this thread, if not could a mod please move to the relevent forum

Anyhow recently my PS2 has started to give me what it calls disc read errors when trying to load games, occasionaly however the game will load but lock up when loading new levels and such.

DVD Movies refuse to play at all now

Now to me it seems as if the lazer is b0rked?

Like a fool i have lost the recipt so therefore have no warrenty on the unit

Anyone know if it can be fixed and if so where and for how much?

Cheers in advance for any advice.

what did you have on the cotton bud?

nail polish remover works quite well in my experience

n if that doesn't work then the laser may well be b0rked

nope it wont, but u could try anyway... does the drive make any strange nioses when it gives the errors? like a clicking or something? or spin up - spin down constantly?

the only fix i know is adjusting the laser voltage, or an RMA if under warrenty still..
basicly, ur laser(s, one for dvd and seperate for cd) r dieing.

my m8s one broke the same, so he got a new one (he is a rich git)and gave the old to me to fix/keep. after some googleing i found about hte laser problems. b4 he gave me it he said it degraded at first it was just some dvds, then all dvds then some cds now ALLL disks. ive managed to get all cds working again but none of the dvds i had worked (one trailer disk and a demo disk). taking it apart viods warrenty etc.. heres how to do it (i cant remeber exactly, was a long time ago):

remove the annoying feet on bottom to get to screws, undo the ones for the bottom bit only?

i cant remmebr how to get to the underside of the drive; if u just remove the bottom bit or if u need to take the lid off and then take the bottom off...

might be stuff ull have to take out to get to drive, if possible DONT disconenct the drives non-ide-but-ide-like cable cos its fkn hard to get it back in cos its soo short.

eventually there are 2 screws (pots) to adjust the voltage, MAKE A MARK ON THEM AND THE PCB/ORANGE THINEH SO U WHAT THEY WERE SET AT!!!

iirc left one = dvd and right = cd laser. turning clockwise for moe, anti for less voltage.

put it back together and should work. u can do it a lot better with an osilloscope (spelt right?) but not many ppl have them (i dont) search on google there was lots of info on it when i looked ages ago.

if u dont want to do that i could possibly do it for ya, ud have to pay postage both ways + £5, pm me if u want me to try. dont know of anywhere that proffesionaly fixes ps2s but i think thers a few sites that can. also u may b able to get replacement laser module (if ur one is dead), costing £60? or it migh tbe £90.. if they are stil being sold online...
theres possible other ways to get the laser voltage higher aswell..
