HEXUS Community Review Sept 2018 - Would you like to review a SteelSeries mouse?
Hi lovely HEXUS Community people
The Forums are a good place to be because you all make it that way.
So we're looking to put some love back out there :)
It's HEXUS COMMUNITY READER REVIEW TIME :D
Our friends at SteelSeries have put something cool on the table.
We want three Good and True Forum Members, who REALLY NEED A NEW MOUSE, but are struggling to justify buying one.... to have a nice new SteelSeries mouse, use it, review it honestly and then to write the review here, within TWO weeks of it arriving.
(You need to be in the UK for this please)
It's a very good mouse. I'm quite jealous as it goes.
SteelSeries RGB Sensei 310 Ambidextrous eSports Gaming Mouse
https://steelseries.com/gaming-mice/sensei-310
https://www.scan.co.uk/products/stee...CABEgKMVPD_BwE
Fancy that? Do you fancy plugging that bad boy in and using it, testing it, then telling us what you think?
(AND..... if you want to review a Rival 310 instead (right handed only), we will sort it with them in lieu)
So here's the offer - we want a Reader Review : 350 to 500 words -photo's would be nice too, in situ on your desk.
HEXUS & SteelSeries will provide the mouse and, you get to keep it :)
So, how do you enter? What will determine how we choose who gets a crack at this?
Easy.. tell us (and show us) just how bad your current mouse is. Make us feel sorry for you. Make us laugh too if you can.
Perhaps you have a PS2 old schooler, in hearing-aid-beige? Perhaps you've never had a mouse worth more than the freebie that came with your Gran's Dell PC, in 2010?
Perhaps, like DR here, you rolled over the USB plug with your office chair and totally arsed-up your old mouse (true story)
OK..over you :)
We will choose the lucky Reader Reviewers next week (week commencing 24th Sept 18) once everyone who want to step forward has... stepped forward ;)
Good luck.

I would like to say a big thank you to Hexus and Steelseries for organising this forum giveaway and will be excited to see the reviews and what people will be upgrading from!

As I sat here looking at my twin laser, RGB, more buttons than the shuttle, 2 billion dpi mouse I just don't think I can get away with saying I need a new one, but good luck to whoever gets it :)

Re: HEXUS Community Review Sept 2018 - Would you like to reivew a SteelSeries mouse?
I'm game.
I am currently using a Gigabyte mouse because it was the cheapest one I could find that had two buttons on the side. To be fair to it, the thing is pretty responsive and the rubber pad on the side hardly ever has to be glued back on again.

Re: HEXUS Community Review Sept 2018 - Would you like to reivew a SteelSeries mouse?
Going to throw my hat into the ring here:
Two big events in my life happened in 2007. Firstly I got married, but more importantly I spent the grand total of £12.79 for a "Microsoft Keyboard & Mouse value pack" from Dabs, an e-tailer so poor that being bought out by BT was actually an improvement. The keyboard has long since died, but the mouse soldiers on.
According to the underside it's a Wheel Mouse Optical 1.1A (I assume the A stands for Awesome,) and boasts of compatibility not only with a PS/2 port but also one of those newfangled USB jobs. It's very compatible on the software side too, with driver support for Windows XP, 2000 and the promise of day 1 drivers for the upcoming Vista which I'm sure we'll all love for years to come. Gaining a 33% increase in buttons over my previous rodent thanks to the mousewheel doubling up as a clickable 3rd button and the sleek black looking much better than my previous beige affair I was mightily impressed.
But what really makes it stand out are the mods I've made to it since. Originally this thing had a Microsoft logo at the back but years of my sweaty palms all over it have worn it down, a cause of great empathy between it and my wife. There's also a noticable sheen on the left mouse button where years of fingering have worn it smooth, a cause of [REDACTED]. The stand out feature though has to be the thin crust that has built up in the grooves of the mousewheel and between the buttons that has accumulated over the years and has been latterly added to by my children so that it contains roughly equal parts skin, sweat, saliva and playdoh. Given the delicate ecology of the mouse (I'm pretty sure it's inhabitants are mere days away from discovering fire,) I'd like to be able to retire it to the Wildlife Trust as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and thus need a replacement.
Obviously that replacement would be reviewed against the backdrop of this long serving, battleworn hardware. Does the (presumably,) higher DPI make a noticable difference in gaming? Is Steelseries Vista support as strong? Can my tiny brain deal with more than 3 buttons? There's only one way to find out...

Re: HEXUS Community Review Sept 2018 - Would you like to reivew a SteelSeries mouse?
I'd like to "reivew" a SteelSeries mouse.
Mostly because my current one is headed rapidly for the knackers yard - due to failure to clean off what I can only describe as years of "hand gunk", which has now worked it's way under the quite vital lmb - and a free one sounds eminently better than buying one.

Re: HEXUS Community Review Sept 2018 - Would you like to reivew a SteelSeries mouse?
ok good people, keep the love coming.
Who else is up for a Review and Keeping what could be the nicest mouse you ever own?

And that made me LOL - my only concern is whether the steel series would support the same biodiverse flora... :p

I'd love to help... but I don't need a new one at all, am not struggling to justify buying any (even if I can't actually afford them), and don't even have sad tales to tell of awful mice - I've always chosen mine rather well and been very happy with all of them.
I look forward to the reviews, though!

Re: HEXUS Community Review Sept 2018 - Would you like to review a SteelSeries mouse?
I'd like to complain about the pornography in Post 12.
Calling the mouse 'her', then showing it's underside? Unacceptable.
Won't someone think of the children?

You're lucky I didn't show her wireless.

Re: HEXUS Community Review Sept 2018 - Would you like to review a SteelSeries mouse?
I don't want to review the mouse, as I've already reviewed it elsewhere, but I'd like to point out that a 1-week window to review something like a gaming mouse isn't very fair, in my opinion. That may well be long enough for a professional reviewer who can dedicate 5-10 hours of their working day to testing out a mouse, but you can't get a good feel for something and a fair assessment within 7 days of normal usage.
Give them a fortnight at least :)

A fortnight or a fortnite?
If they're actively looking for people that currently have an old and grotty mouse I'd imagine it'll be a massive improvement regardless.

Re: HEXUS Community Review Sept 2018 - Would you like to review a SteelSeries mouse?
I have an old Razer Mamba 2012 edition, the battery hasn't worked for 3 years so it is no longer wireless and my son thinks it's funny to detach it from the charging cable and hide it.
I can't post a picture of it as the little bleeder can't remember where he bloody well hid it, this was about 3 weeks ago so I am using my laptop mouse, that being a little T630 :(
I am 6'2 and have huge hands so my gaming is on hold pending finding my mouse, send me this and you can have a review from me and my 8 year old daughter who also uses my PC :)
-
Re: HEXUS Community Review Sept 2018 - Would you like to review a SteelSeries mouse?
I'd be more than happy to review one for you guys, but like many I don't have a real need to replace my mouse - it's more of a desire ;)
I've been slowly shifting my equipment from Razor over the Steelseries and the mouse is the one of the last things to go...(keyboard is on the way!). Mostly as they really impressed me with the Arctis Pro Wireless and that inspired me to make the switch. Plus it's nicer when everything RGB is controlled by the same controller :)
BUT I can't justify to myself spending £50 on a new mouse now. I'll happily spend hundreds on a GPU or a case, but for some reason my mind doesn't want me to replace my 7 year old Razor mouse.
On a side note I am mildly impressed that any razor product has survived 7 years near daily use without falling to bits!

Re: HEXUS Community Review Sept 2018 - Would you like to review a SteelSeries mouse?
thank you guys for your intuitive input :)
I'll work on this today.

GoNz0 from this post
https://forums.hexus.net/general-dis...ml#post4014203
And definately DanceswithUnix for this post
https://forums.hexus.net/general-dis...ml#post4012613
All three of these guys - well done and welcome to the world of reviewing kit :)
Please can each of you send me a PM with your full names, addresses. mobile numbers (couriers use them) and email address I will be in contact with SteelSeries to arrange postage.
Once I have arranged postage your given details for this will be deleted and not used in any marketing activity.
https://www.themediateam.net/privacy/
I'm going to take our firend Hoonigan's words of wisdom and extend the timescale out to two weeks for the reviews to be complete. What I think would work well is an inital impressions post, followed by a more thorough review. Photos will be great if possible too.
I will create a new thread for the actual reviews :)

I'll do a PM.
If you want pictures, is there still a really low limit on what I can upload on here? I don't like cross linking from other sites.
Edit: Yep, looks like I am 760KB used out of 1MB. JPEG artifacts here we come :D
-
Re: HEXUS Community Review Sept 2018 - Would you like to review a SteelSeries mouse?
I really don't have a use for a new mouse - certainly not one like the steel series.
I prefer trackpads or trackballs.
Otherwise I'd happily do a review, but I think others could make better use of its capabilities than I would.

Re: HEXUS Community Review Sept 2018 - Would you like to review a SteelSeries mouse?
Got mine as well although it isn't the right handed one that I asked for when offered the choice, not to worry as it means I can review something I wouldn't have considered buying now :D
-
Re: HEXUS Community Review Sept 2018 - Would you like to review a SteelSeries mouse?
Back in Post #26 (https://forums.hexus.net/general-dis...ml#post4015658) we were asked for an initial impression, so I will put that here rather than starting a new thread for that.
As per Gonzo I got the ambidextrous version which is the first mouse I have had for as long as I can remember which wasn't right handed. It is pretty comfortable though, so happy with that.
It feels well balanced, the cable is way more flexible than the old Gigabyte which helps the feel a lot more than I expected. I worried that the RBG would annoy me, but so far I have just left it on default and it actually looks quite soothing with its slowly changing colours.
So initial impression is very positive, I certainly won't be going back to the old mouse :)
-
Re: HEXUS Community Review Sept 2018 - Would you like to review a SteelSeries mouse?
Glad they arrived.
Sorry you guys got the Ambi Dex versons - my fault as i started it off on those (and added the other choice in and didn't check availability....)
We look forward to the long term use reviews over the next couple of weeks.:)
and photo's please too :D

that's the first thing I noticed too :) and I didn't even know to expect it!
I had no idea at all the old mouse I was using had a stiff cable...then....whoosh....DR stole the mouse and it's on his PC now.

Re: HEXUS Community Review Sept 2018 - Would you like to review a SteelSeries mouse?
I think I finally have mine setup right. Not keen on the left handed buttons and it has a design flaw I will leave for the review :)
Good mouse though. :)

Re: HEXUS Community Review Sept 2018 - Would you like to review a SteelSeries mouse?
@ GoNzO
Very impressed with your honesty about the design flaw as people will often say something is great for no other reason than they got it for free.

Re: HEXUS Community Review Sept 2018 - Would you like to review a SteelSeries mouse?
Initial impressions of the Sensei 310.
Well it looked very snazzy out of the box:
https://preview.ibb.co/jqJzb9/IMG_20..._COVER_TOP.jpg
and upon plugging it in to my surprise Windows recognised all the extra buttons without installing any extra software. That said, for full effect I thought I'd install the Steelseries driver package from their website. This led to a "get off my lawn" moment. 113mb! For a mouse driver! Not only that, as soon as it recognised the rodent in question it insisted on downloading a firmware update for it. I've never had a mouse need a firmware update before!
Once that was done the Steelseries Engine software opened up. This is a combination of a config tool to alter what each button does (useful and well laid out,) as well as a system for downloading "Engine Apps" which allow different software and games to manipulate the throbbing RGB logo and mousewheel. You can have it pulse in time to your music, flash a certain colour when you get a message on Discord, or even go red when you die in Counterstrike. While all this seemed interesting I did what I imagine 90% of people do: Try a couple of them once to see if it works (it does,) then promptly set it back to default and never touched it again.
On to the mouse itself. As others have mentioned the cable is softer and more flexible than any I've previously encountered, which is a good thing for moving the thing around but I worry about how it'll cope with the kids (if I let them near it.) The side grip pads are a different rubbery texture to the smooth plastic of the rest of the mouse which makes it easy to grib and lets you know when you're holding the side of the mouse and not the side mouse buttons. And it's smooth, gliding easily across my desktop with minimal effort.
As for how it performs, wow. I'm having to relearn how to use a mouse. I can't seem to find a DPI figure for my old MS Optical mouse but this is an order of magnitude more sensitive. I spent the first couple of hours overshooting everything I wanted to click on, and I'm still getting the hang of it now. Once I do it'll be interesting to see how I fare in some games with it. I'm also having to learn how to use more than 3 buttons, forcing myself to use the side ones. Once I've had a week or so to do that I'll report back with a more in depth review.

The side grip pads are a different rubbery texture to the smooth plastic of the rest of the mouse which makes it easy to grib and lets you know when you're holding the side of the mouse and not the side mouse buttons.
Once I've had a week or so to do that I'll report back with a more in depth review.
welcome to the world of serious mice :)
its nice to see these initial impressions :)

if he hates it we will get both barrels... that's what reader reviews are for!
but the importance of being ernest is that what he hates somepeople might like so it's good both ways.

So it would appear the day I wrote the initial review was an hour before I rolled back my image with macrium wiping out my initial review. Oh well it will give me something to do again :censored:

I put my review in General Discussion as requested, then wondered if User Reviews would have been more sensible?

Well it looked very snazzy out of the box:

and upon plugging it in to my surprise Windows recognised all the extra buttons without installing any extra software.
