The 8700K price has increased to stop people realising what a rip-off the 9700k is

Scan has the 8700K at £460, with the 9700K a few entries down for £500. Historical prices on Amazon have it averaging around £350, but it's now £450.

What a weird time we're in, where we're paying a premium for parts that don't offer much improvement. It seems when Apple hit a trillion, everyone's ears pricked up and now they're all trying to apply the iDiot tax.

Stop hating on "poor" Intel, got to think of those margins, right??

To put it in context, the Intel fastest mainstream CPU has been between $305 to $370,and the new top end consumer CPU,is now $499,so Intel is doing an Nvidia Titan level resuffling of ranges,ie,now pushing things one level up.

Will it work, yep - don't underestimate E-PEEN and "wanting the best" for bragging rights,or the fact credit is still very easy to get. People will pay it and prices will start to slowly rise, and if that is pointed out people will fight tooth and nail so Intel can charge them more and more. I also think AMD will also release consumer products at such price points since its good news for them(less for us),but aim to offer more at the price-point than reduce them.

Even look now - AMD has no real reason to drop any prices, which is great for them, since the Core i5 is still where it was originally at RRP,but in reality has gone up a lot more in price. Basically a Ryzen 7 2700X with a decent stock cooler is less than Core i5 9600K money.

Aye, people are willing to sink a lot of money into something that is the best, even if it's by a tiny margin. And brand loyalty too, which is such a bizarre concept (don't get me wrong I'm guilty of it myself, forming attachments is intrinsically a thing we all do!).

I'm weirdly excited to see Intel fail though. Same for Nvidia. Seeing them fail, take a fall, and someone do better, can only result in something better for all of us.

I'm also excited for Ryzen 2. At this rate Intel won't even have a chance to release misleading benchmarks at all!

I found the less I measurebated, the more I actually enjoyed games and stopped worrying "whether I was bottlenecked",as when I was truly CPU bottlenecked it was obvious!! If not at every gen,you could argue the latest AMD or Intel CPU is less "bottlenecking" than the previous one and so on.

I have seen it on tech forums where people get so caught up on this, they end up spending loads of money, and actually not getting a perceptable upgrade. OFC,YMMV but I am definitely not PCMR and my E-PEEN is very tiny!!

Don't forget Black Friday is nearing, I've noticed a few things starting to creep back up. I suspect it's because of this.
Honestly I'd wait until mid Jan - early Feb to buy things. I fell for the Black Friday scam last year, the Jan price was cheaper than the Black Friday price.

The only thing I'm looking to buy new is an M.2 SSD. Everything else I'm buying used. I was so disappointed when Intel announced the i9 and gutted the i7.
If I was buying new I would go AMD.

Is that effect separate from the drop in the pound causing our costs to go up?

yes/no, both the euro and the pound have gone down furthermore intel are moneygrabbing so they will inflate prices and blame these "cost effectors"

Re: The 8700K price has increased to stop people realising what a rip-off the 9700k i

The Core i9 9900K is around £600 which is around $784:

    https://www.overclockers.co.uk/intel...cp-65j-in.html
    https://www.scan.co.uk/products/inte...-1200mhz-gpu-9
    https://www.ebuyer.com/859394-intel-...RoCcOcQAvD_BwE

The Core i9 9900K is $530 to $580 in the US:

    https://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...-957-_-Product
    https://www.amazon.com/Intel-i9-9900.../dp/B005404P9I

Even 20% VAT does not add up to $200 to $250 extra over the US price.

I'm struggling to find a use for the 9900k/9700k beyond benchmarks only.

I doubt there's any game now or forseeably due out that will noticably better to play on a 9900k than a 2700x. For those where higher performance = more money to be generated, they should buy something more powerful and expensive such as Threadripper or Intel's own HEDT processors.

The games were Intel would be appreciably better in would work just as well on Core i5 8600K/9600K or a Core i7 7700K AFAIK.

I used http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/ to measure the difference between CPUs on various different workloads. An i5 is just fine for gaming and you have to pay around 4x as much for a CPU that'll make any appreciable difference beyond this. The benfits for going above this seem to be limited to workstation workloads.

Basically this is my experience from running numerous games. If the game engine has any degree of proper console optimisation, they will usually scale better with more threads, and an old Core i5 or Core i7 will actually for the most part be fine, especially if you don't overpower it with too fast a card(draw calls can cause issues). However,if any game is still based on essentially an ancient PC derived games engine, which has only minute updates(even for console),you are single core bottlenecked massively,so the advantage of the newer CPUs if comparing stock to stock,is basically higher clockspeed and IPC cores, and some of these engines like Bethesda's Creation try to multithreaded but end up scaling to six threads, but hammering two,so its the worst of both worlds, and on top of this like faster RAM and lower latencies since so much is dependent on those one to two cores.
